I have a lot of left-wing friends on Facebook/Twitter and lately they've been posting that Biden is backing off initiatives that he supported during the campaign, including cancelling student loans and ending Trump's migrant detention policies. They're not particularly fond of him anyway and I'm not sure exactly where they are getting this information but just interested in hearing from anybody here if this is remotely accurate or true. I feel like it's probably something he might have said that they're miscontruing and/or taking out of context but not sure.

(24,819 posts)A lot of my left-leaning friends didn't even end up voting for him and are going to criticize pretty much anybody but Bernie, so I always treat a lot of what they say with a grain of salt without further information. I hope that Biden gets a fair shake and a chance to get his game on when he gets into office because he's being left a big bag of flaming poo thanks to Trump and he's not cooperating well with the transition.

(49,838 posts)as congress allows. We still don't know who will control the senate, so that is a big factor. Meanwhile, his highest priority will be to get the pandemic under control and get the economy up and running, while reestablishing our diplomatic ties around the world. You can be sure that there will be a handful of Never-Biden liberals, who will find fault with everything he does. I believe we've seen this movie before when Obama took office.
Biden will not be able to please everyone and being he has been in government a long time, he is fully aware of that. You win some, you lose some, and you cut your losses wherever you can. Not terribly sexy, but if you live in a democracy, that is how change comes about in the real world.
We need our idealists and activists. They inspire us and show us what is possible. Then we need our pragmatists, who can make those dreams reality. However, the reality doesn't always match the original ideal 100%, hence that worn out, but very true cliché - "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good".
And for all your disgruntled liberal friends, I would suggest they put their progressive energies into local, state, and congressional races. That is where almost all change originates - from the bottom up, not the top down.

(19,090 posts)Look how close the House is now. Plus best case scenario, the Senate will be 50-50. How can anything progressive get past moderate to conservative Democrats in Congress?

(58,731 posts)They are the opposition. When Dems come to a consensus in the House and pass a bill on to the republicans, that's where the logjam begins.

(19,090 posts)But best cast, the Senate will be 50-50 tomorrow, with Harris as the tiebreaker. You're not getting anything progressive passed from Manchin.

(5,509 posts)with this congress? Even if we win the Senate, we will not be able to
remove the filibuster. And our majority in the house is tight with purple
seats being at major risk in two years. Biden will do well to pass a few
moderate pieces of legislation like infrastructure in the next two years.

At best, both are fonts of people's opinion, unburdened by actual fact. At worst, they are cesspools of disinformation.
If you trust your friends, ask for their sources. So far, the sources I see for these points are "anonymous" sources, or concern trolls.

He has also said he won't be able to reverse Trump's detention policies right away. Remember some of the Obama era immigration policies were kind of a step backward (imho). I inferred from what Biden said is that at least initially he will go back to having asylum/migration cases decided in the originating country via US Embassy before anyone actually comes to the US.
