Can Schumer refer the impeachment to committee?

Assuming Pelosi pauses sending notice of impeachment until Schumer is the Majority Leader, can the Democrats decide to send the matter of impeachment to a committee, thus freeing up the Senate to do other urgent business?

David Waldman of Daily Kos, who is knowledgeable, says this:

There is no reason why an impeachment trial for Trump should block confirmation votes on Biden’s appointments.

If Trump is no longer in office, it’s no longer a trial of “the president,” and the Senate can hold the trial in committee, the way they do when impeaching judges.
