David Waldman, of Daily Kos, who is knowledgeable of Senate rules and who worked before with Senate Democrats on filibuster reform, says if the impeachment trial starts when Democrats are in control, they can send the impeachment matter to a committee while the main Senate works on more urgent matters like COVID.

The Senate conducts non-presidential impeachments (as they do for federal judges) in committee. That leaves the floor open for Biden nominations.
IMHO, the Speaker should pause sending notice of impeachment to the Senate until after the Democrats take over.
EDIT: Marcy Wheeler also says a committee can be used:

(58,785 posts)I think the ONLY situation in which the house would send notice of impeachment to the current senate would be if a bipartisan deal was reached to proceed with immediate trial and removal.
That seems to be a firm no-go at this point, but of course no one can say what Trump might force.

(60,722 posts)So must FULL prosecution of ALL, with maximum sentences.
Anything less will give credence to the "both parties are the sane" excuse for not voting blue & apathy would likely be rampant.
That said, I fully believe Dems have quite an appetite to impeach, prevent him from holding future office positions, and for prosecuting.
No danger of looking like a "banana republic," we are already there!
