(7,512 posts)That's why the Republicans don't like them.
It's a philosophy, not an organization. No one heads it, no one directs it. It's just a patriotic response by people who stand opposed to those who want to destroy the Republic.
And right now that's the Republican party as headed by TFG.

(16,579 posts)Antifaschistische Aktion was started by Trotsky himself in the 1920's... in the Weimar Republic with the support of Lenin.

It's not a 21st Century creation from Portland... and it's NOT US GI's in 1944...
It began life in the 1920's as Antifaschistische Aktion, started by Communists in the Weimar Republic, supported by the new Boss in Russia. Antifa Action groups sprung up all over the world, even in the USA in the 1920's and 1930's and they still exist today.

(32,702 posts)I believe modern Antifa are anti-military and anti-authority and pretty much anti-government
I don't believe we should lump allied troops with Antifa...
I have no idea what happened to the Antifa groups during WWII.
They re-emerged in Europe after WWII with complaints that they didn't "do enough" to prevent the Nazis...
But I kinda doubt that their sticks would have a chance over the Nazis....

(16,579 posts)Patton would smack the shit out of any soldier calling himself ANTIFA. ANTIFASCHISTISCHE AKTION was founded by mass murderer and war criminal Leon Trotsky and was a front organization for the Russian Communist Party... aka the Red Army.
It's just history, I recommend people educate themselves.

(14,004 posts)Now, that being said, some European anarchist cells will sometimes call themselves Antifa, because anyone who doesn't buy into their particular fantasy that all hierarchies are inherently oppressive (except, of course, for the ones they are on top in) is a Fascist.
Sort of like the Right calling anyone who isn't as conservative as they are Communists.
Antifa in America tends to comprise of anyone who can head out when there's a protest event to support some form of threatened Civil Rights and participate, whether they're part of an organized group (i.e., Moms for Justice), or just willing to go out and hold a sign in solidarity.
Not really organized, other than the local protest group who might be organized enough to apply for a permit on any particular event.

(36,005 posts)young white people, though not exclusively. They are drawn from groups like Black Bloc, Anarchist collectives, and Direct Action. Lots of black-clad Punk Rock kids: Crusties, Crass patches (Crass is a 40-year old punk band). That is my impression, at least.
There are FB pages for various Antifa groups that appear real, like Rose City Antifa and Emerald City Antifa (I belong to both). The post related articles but never any organizing info, and they haven't posted much at all since Michael Reinoehl was shot down in the street by Federal "deputies".
Anyone can buy an Antifa flag, but you don't see Antifa until the Fascists come out of their holes: 3%ers, Proud Boys, skinheads. They're willing to oppose Fascism directly, with physical force.

(162 posts)Who was also a member of "Occupy" and who rebuilt a steam table and delivered it (strapped to the roof of a Toyota) as part of his aid efforts after Hurricane Sandy. Arrested in a St. Patrick's day Occupy protest and beaten by cops. Cost him his job when he was held an extra 3 days for refusing a retinal scan. He also raised 2 grandsons of mine, the younger of whom recently graduated high school. In other words, my son, a fine activist citizen and exactly the kind of people we need more of...
