Not leaving twitter.
Even after MF45's reinstatement.
If Eloon want's me gone, he'll have to kick me off.
Don't want MAGAt's, wingnuts & nazis to be the only voice.
Since when has it become acceptable to cede ground to fascists?

(11,474 posts)I would use the example of people who got out of Germany early, then helped the Allies in opposition.
In the case of Twitter, staying there just supports the regime. The more people leave, the less power it has. Give your power to some other site.

(7,071 posts)It's about handing over a huge platform for communications to nutbags. Do whatever you want, no one's going to care, one way or the other.
But I will personally stay and harass GQPpers and other vatniks as long as I feel like it. Won't pay for it, though.

(6,038 posts)You can't maintain a service like that when 5 out of every 6 people who were working there three weeks ago are gone.
It's been running fine for the last week, but that's likely just inertia. Wait until they run into their first crisis, and it takes an order of magnitude longer time to deal with than it should, because the person with the institutional knowledge to solve it quickly took their three months severance and found a non-abusive place to work. Then wait until they run into cascading crises, IMO, it's just a matter of time before it all comes to a crashing halt.
Twitter died last week, it's just that the corpse hasn't stopped moving yet.

(73 posts)Then again, welfare case Eloon is pretty good at getting gov't subsidies, and lots of talking heads & politicians of all stripes want &/or use twitter for it's reach. Not a likely scenario, grant it, but stranger things have happened.

(9 posts)I'd love to see it become a desolate wasteland populated only by creeps and QAnon creeps.
Let Elon Musk get what he asked for.
The nature of social media is that it can change quickly. If enough people migrate over to a different platform the quicker we can hasten its demise.

(15,602 posts)I stopped watching Fox back during the 2008 Primary. When I had cable I even blocked it on my cable box. I tend to boycott businesses when their business practices offend me. Musk himself is offensive.
He has plans of turning twitter into a one stop online shop where we will all be buying and selling everything from content to product and will have a money sharing service like Venmo etc.
Will I trust a vindictive thin skinned narcissistic character with my personal and financial information ? No.
There are alternatives to twitter.
Fords Crackpipe
(73 posts)Agree on that point. The moment I see that happening, I'm done. I will not provide any personal/financial info to that scumbag.
Until then, I'm staying.
Other platforms like Mastodon are still too new & unwieldy for the likes of me (have to select which server you want to be on-WTF?).
Hopefully they will evolve into something better. When & if that happens I'll be only too glad to switch over.

its not a matter of ceding ground, but of lining pockets. Everyone who stays and interacts with Twitter brings in advertising revenue just by opening and scrolling through it and, more importantly, sends the message to advertisers that were O.K. with it.
As for me, Ive left Twitter for Mastodon and CounterSocial.

Plus I want to still be able to see updates from POTUS Biden, AOC, Elizabeth Warren ect ect ect - all of whom are still on twitter, advertising & clicks be darned.
Hopefully the other platforms will evolve into something bigger & better. When & if that happens I'll be only too glad to switch over.

(14,198 posts)Who cares about twitter? Apparently, many do. But I've never "gotten it." It's just a modern-day version of a bulletin board (BBS.) I'm glad my life doesn't revolve around the spontaneous thoughts and utterances of ... well, anyone! It's like millions of people live and breathe on such things as if nothing were more important in their lives than what some Tom, Dick and Harry thinks or has to say about things. Are these people's lives so empty? There may be the occasional interesting thing on twitter, but whatever it is can easily be discovered in many other ways. Twitter seems to be just the latest way for people to try to become "famous for being famous" and generate interest and, of course, money off their hoped-for "celebrity status."
This is not that different from people going crazy about what a right-wing talk or TV show said and then go on a posting tirade about "did you hear what so-and-so said? It was horrible!!11!!" My first reaction is to think, "if it bothers you so much, why are you even watching/listening to it?" They've been sucked into an addiction to the world of outrage porn, which is really what all such shows -- and twitter itself -- are.
Speaking of tirades, I will stop mine here! LOL

(30,635 posts)I don't really "like" twitter. I certainly don't enjoy it, but it is a major source of breaking news etc.
When news breaks it's often on twitter. Creating blogs and updating websites takes times. The media often breaks news on twitter because it is easy and live. All of the reporters always have their phones and what do they do with their phone? They tweet the latest news.

(22,669 posts)I'm not going to support it for the same reason i don't shop at Hobby Lobby or eat at Jimmy Johns.
Twitter is a private company and Musk is free to run it as he sees fit, but I'm not going to help him.
I'd rather see all the decent people leave because then it will go down in flames and Musk will either have to make it a decent place or just let his 44 billion go up in flames. he still has loans to pay back.
Think of it as going on strike.

(23,015 posts)It may not be a perfect analogy, but it's close enough. There no longer is any semblance of a fiction that Twitter is neutral, or even contested, ground. A mega rich private owner has his thumb on the sale all of the time. Better that it fail, or at the very least that it no longer dominate its market. Let an alternative emerge with the support of sane users. After all, since when has it become acceptable to cede ground to fascists?

It's not France 1940. Sitting in jammies and snarking online is not La Resistance.
I get that America has become something of a . . . uh . . . sedentary country, but no one's waging the grand underground war with Netflix running in the background.
I was at a holiday party last night discussing religion with a friend (he's very churchy - I'm not). And it got down to how humans need religion in some form. Not necessarily a sky God or anything. Just a belief system they'll place a great deal of importance and subsume identity into. Where the rational will be shut off in favor of the irrational and the faith-based. I argued that I think a lot of ideologies - particularly on social media - displace out of objectivity and become as wild as anything else out there.
So, writing tweets is just like tank warfare? And Musk is Hitler now? (I cannot keep up with who is Hitler these days. It's an ever-shifting rascal of a thing).
Yeah. So, anyway. Counterpoint: It's just social media, everyone will live. 99% of what 99% of the people there do is not important and will not be remembered three days from now. It's a daytime distraction on par with interactive soap opera.
