He could have rounded up enough Republican Senators to convict and remove him. He might even have won back the Senate last fall. By leaving T***p untouched, he exacerbated this mess.

At the first impeachment a few GOP senators could've knocked him out of contention right then. Or even the second one would've put his federal political aspirations to bed.

Nothing else makes sense unless they have been pretending about supporting the Constitution and democracy for decades.

They are simply that craven and depraved, they don't need to be coerced into not doing the right thing - that simply is a prerequisite for being an R at this point.
