"When the multiple shots happened, my heart just dropped," he said. "I was on the phone with 911 and I was telling them we have a mass casualty incident."
Spainhouer said he got there before any first responders and while a handful of people around him recorded videos of the bodies on the ground, he tried to save lives.
"I never imagined in 100 years I would be thrust into the position of being the first first responder on the site to take care of people," he shared. "The first girl I walked up to was crouched down covering her head in the bushes, so I felt for a pulse, pulled her head to the side and she had no face."
Spainhouer said he also found a child, who survived while covered by his protective mother who had been killed.
"When I rolled the mother over, he came out. I asked him if he was OK and he said, 'My mom is hurt, my mom is hurt.' So rather than traumatize him, I pulled him around the corner sat him down and he was covered from head to toe...like somebody poured blood on him."

I don't need first hand accounts of the carnage. I want self-reflection from them. I want them to realize where the solution is to all of these shootings.

(88,900 posts)This jumps out at me and it PISSES ME OFF.
All those people coldly, cruelly recorded and posted videos and did not for a moment consider helping the victims. Spainhouer did.
I can't even.
Call me out if you want, this makes me ill.

(29,975 posts)To be "recording", instead of helping in that situation seems cold and sick to me.

(88,900 posts)Thank you. I felt gut punched when I read that.
Were they recording for the thrill? Perhaps the money they can make from selling it. This wasn't like recording George Floyd's murder. They were held back by police and they were recording the violence...these people were taking pictures of dead babies, their mommies and dads.

I don't know. It's all I can come up with. I guess that's my coping mechanism.

(5,128 posts)Spainhouer called 911 and got in vehicle, raced to site, got there before any other 1st responders. I believe police officer on site had already "neutralized" shooter.
This could have been so much worse had that officer not happened to be there, by chance, on another call.
Every incident is horrific. This one touched to very, very close to home. I've shopped there with my mom. Too many people I know shop there. I don't believe it will ever be the same. We truly are not safe to go anywhere, anytime of the day or night.

(406 posts)Isn't an individual obligated by law to help if possible or is that only if one is involved in the accident? I seem to recall from a long time ago (age isn't all that great for remembering details) that if you are part of a chain accident (could a mass shooting qualify) that you were not to leave the scene but to render aid if possible. I am probably delusional.

(25,183 posts)They are convinced that if they are at the scene of a mass shooting they will be able to defend themselves and take out the shooter.
It does not occur to them that they might be the first or second one shot, caught by surprise without warning, before they even have time to see where the shots are coming from or who the shooter is.
I agree with posts that say that this is domestic terrorism and that's the reason why R legislators are happy to have guns available to anyone, any time, any where. When people feel terrified, they are more willing to accept authoritarian leadership.
