I'll say this as briefly as I can.... The Minocqua Brewing Company in northern Wisconsin is being targeted because they are a progressive voice in a sea of red bullshit. Earlier, they were at another location and had a huge Biden sign on their establishment. They were immediately attacked and targeted, and they moved to a new location, not far from their original location. The local government assholes said they were not following the local codes, regulations, etc. They are the ONLY local company being targeted; others are doing things not up to regulations, but are being left alone... nothing to see there. When the owner, Kirk Bangstad, wanted to make his voice heard before the meeting to unjustly shut him down, they refused to let him talk, or anyone else in support. Minocqua is a major tourism destination in northern Wisconsin, and they are doing this at the height of the tourism season, majorly affecting his business. Mr. Bangstad is suing Oneida County and the town of Minocqua in an effort to stop this. His Facebook page has a Go Fund Me set up to help with legal expenses. This really should have some national exposure in my opinion.

But yeah, I see businesses with overfilled garbage containers all the time. They never get shut down for it.

(114,650 posts)Looks like he needs to convert his outdoor seating to parking places and make sure his trash is secured. Then he can start hitting those assholes with requests for variances, some legit and some silly, the legit ones documenting the capacity vs parking space violations of neighboring businesses, the presence of unpermitted outdoor seating at other businesses, and so on. He can also video his "concerned citizen" 24/7 watchers, maybe charge them with stalking and/or harassment He can fight back IOW. When they realize he's not an easy target any more, the bullies will back off.
Some of the complaints, like the trash, look legit. The others are nuisance complaints and he needs to comply until he gets variances or someone in national news reports the story and the assholes cave.
I think it's a mistake to bring religion or politics into one's business, it always causes hard feelings in some people no matter what it is or how mild the demonstration. The die is cast here, so he needs to comply and then be as big a pain in the ass as he can, especially when some of those county people are related to business owners who are also not compliant with local regs.
But definitely secure that garbage against scavengers.

Hi Folks,
Last week was one for the ages at the Minocqua Brewing Company, but before I tell the story, I want to update you on our phase 0 project to come up with the strategy on how to legally overturn the private school voucher system in Wisconsin that is bleeding our public schools dry. Our legal team should be done with their analysis and I should be able to tell you what were going to do by mid-August, and since the balance of Wisconsins Supreme Court wont officially lean progressive until August, were making great time in getting our ducks lined up in a row to file a thoroughly vetted lawsuit by September/Early October.
Now for the wild and amusing story that involves a Dumpster Koozie, a Freedomster, a song by the Beastie Boys, and an ill-fitting rainbow jumpsuit. We found out last weekend that the Oneida County zoning committee scheduled a hearing to amend, suspend, or revoke our permit to do business. It was a wildly heavy-handed and arguably illegal escalation of our three-year-old fight to create an outdoor space for our customers to drink beer.
In this last chapter, they accused us of two violations"outdoor beer sales and not fencing in our dumpster. Those violations were apparently worthy of shuttering our business, which is arguably one the most popular establishments in Minocqua. This saga quickly became humorous because within a few hours, we crowdsourced many pictures of other bars doing absolutely nothing to keep their customers within any sort of organized drinking area, and over 10 examples of other businesses not enclosing their dumpsters. We even found a picture of an unenclosed dumpster at the Oneida County courthouse, where the County Zoning committee meets!

This was clearly a case of selective enforcement, which is a legal term that if proven, can be used to win lawsuits against government harassment. But we REALLY dont want to spend the $200-$400K that it will cost us to sue our county in federal court over the course of the next several years just to serve beer outside, and Id much rather spend my time raising money to help Wisconsin rid itself of our parasitic private school voucher program, so we figured wed try some good old-fashioned grass-roots organizing to show our County Board zoning committee how ridiculous they were acting.
Here's a timeline of what happened last week:.....................

Kirk Bangstad owns a brewery; he also owns a Super PAC. How many brewery owners can make that statement? Founder of Minocqua Brewing Company in Minocqua, WI, Bangstad wants change social change, political change, and an end to what he calls The Trump world were living in, where the lines of what is okay have been blurred and theres a lot of ugliness going around.
And in the two years Bangstad has been politicized, he has learned to fight the Right with the same tools they employ. Hence, the Super PAC, which Bangstad started in January 2021 after being forced to close his brewpub. I call it dark money for good, says Bangstad, who to date has raised nearly half a million dollars to support local progressive causes.

It has been a rollercoaster journey into politics for Bangstad. He has run for the Wisconsin State Assembly, sued the entire Wisconsin school board, used his Super PAC to sue two Wisconsin congressmen and a state senator, and found himself sued by local paper the Lakewood Times. He has attracted equal amounts of ire and admiration from right and left wing activists respectively around the U.S. and beyond, been featured in national media, and had to call the FBI after receiving a hate-speech-filled death threat.
But along the way he has also learned he has a secret weapon. Something he had been perfecting long before politics. Bangstad has the power of beer behind him. In fact, its the business of beer, rebuilding, growing, and eventually closing Minocqua Brewing (and switching to contract brew), that sparked Bangstads transition from apolitical brewpub owner to a bastion of Northern Wisconsins social conscience.

Hi Friends,
The worst case scenario happened yesterday.
Three white conservative men, barely a quorum of a county zoning committee consisting of only five white conservative men, voted to revoke the Minocqua Brewing Companys permit to do business.
The evidence of political targeting and selective enforcement by the Town of Minocqua and Oneida County is staggering, and we presented it all at yesterdays meeting.
Our supporters sent over 8,000 emails to the county board pleading for them to come to their senses.
Over 5,000 of you signed a petition pleading for this board to take their partisan blinders off and simply act like rational adults.
The folks who showed up at both hearings to shut us down overwhelmingly supported our business and spoke clearly and passionately about why what these men were doing was wrong.
Not trusting that the zoning committee would allow me to speak after they posted a public agenda that intimated that they wouldnt allow me to speak, I had 8 volunteers recount every logical angle of why, through either gross incompetence, maliciousness, or a combination of both, our permits were illegally processed, and why the violations used as evidence against us should be nullified.
These three men, barely a quorum, LISTENED TO NONE OF IT.
They knew they would revoke our permit to do business before they arrived at the meeting yesterday, but they needed a public hearing to provide legal cover to do their dirty work.
All of this is absolutely galling, and enough to make one speechless.
So what are we doing now?
We are appealing this decision to the county administrative committee that oversees the zoning committee.
In conjunction to that probably-fruitless effort (most of the administrative committee is also deeply Republican and part of the Old Boys Network), we will be asking a federal court for an injunction to stop the county from enforcing this hateful decision.
Why a federal court?
This is 100% a First Amendment constitutional issue. Our town and county are retaliating against us for being loudly progressive in a deeply red MAGA Republican area.
We now have to dive fully into intense legal action, and my companys top source of revenue, our Tap Room in Minocqua, has technically been shut down.
I will try to stay open as were filing appeals, but Im not sure how long that will last.
I think what has been done to my company is wrong, and I believe they did this to stop my companys public activism that has helped elect Governor Evers, State Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz, and our upcoming lawsuit to rid Wisconsin of its parasitic private school voucher system.
>From my point of view, this is much larger than a local zoning battle. What was done yesterday was an affront to everything I take pride in as an American transparency, due process, fairness, industry, a can-do spirit, independence....
...and from an even deeper set of values, I strongly believe that these guys just broke the Golden Rule, which is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
If you believe in my companies simple goal to exist without harassment, I could use some help to offset what I believe will be some very hefty legal expenses. Please chip in here if you can.
Thanks for your continued support.

(2,591 posts)For a person in a legislative body to act out reprisals to business like this?
I have been very disappointed by our Captains of Industry
and the silence by corporations which are nothing more than a concentrated groups of citizens focused on same thing. The threats congress members like Greene, Boebert or Gosar have subtly made about watching out when they are back in power. That they will make Corps. pay for not going along with their lies and bs. This is against the law and both plus many more gop idiots should have already been expelled for making these threats.
