(47,607 posts)Money. Health care. There will be so many leaving. Countries will be closing their borders. What do Americans have to offer? Skills and money, and lots of both if you want to get admitted somewhere. Have they developed an Ugly American test? Some don't live respectful lives. Oh wait, those are supposed to be the ones that won't be leaving. There are ex-Pat communities everywhere. So there is a little support, for orientation. But many are well-heeled Republicans.

(96,882 posts)Most developed countries don't have an open door policy unless you have a skill set they need or can buy a golden passport.

(17,390 posts)no other country really wants middle class people. Now, if you're wealthy, you'll be fine here or anywhere else.
But for most of us, we're stuck with whatever happens.

(597 posts)I'm sure they still visited this site and saw a post about it. You can filter a lot of the news you receive way better nowadays than you could a couple decades ago. You don't need a newspaper or television to remain updated on events like you used to need.
In many ways, I think that has helped lead to an increase in partisanship among Americans as we all focus on our own info bubbles.

(18,300 posts)..the British Baking Show. Lordy is that funny.....but makes me hungry.
Used to watch steady MSNBC but I can't take it anymore. Still watch Rachel though.
I've learned so much from British Baking Show! And I'm constantly looking up what the different baked items are. And oh Lordy, the slang words! I also have to do that from all the tv shows on Acorn and Britbox.

(3,727 posts)Biden will win handily, but Trump cheats, and most Republicans will help him cheat. Add onto this that the Supreme Court seems to be purposely dragging it's feet deciding on the immunity question, it doesn't look like Trump will even be brought to a criminal jury trial before election time.
If he doesn't face harsh consequences for what he has already done, what's to stop him and his flunkies from trying again, and maybe succeeding this time. I may be overly pessimistic but then again I think it's possible to be overly optimistic too.

(1,186 posts)I refuse to believe they have any chance of succeeding. Their best chance was after 2020 when a lot of people didnt see the extent of the craziness coming. I predict 2024 will be even more of a landslide and everyone will see the craziness coming. I just wish he was running from behind bars.

(1,449 posts)Newfoundland (where I am from) and PEI are more expensive because of having to get goods to the island. A close friend in Newfoundland is always telling me prices of things and it is so expensive. New Brunswick is closer to the US border than the other Maritime provinces and with family down here, I may have to come here for something or other. So, that is the province I am choosing. You cannot go wrong with NS or NB.

Nonetheless, we dont think well stay in the U.S. if Trump regains the presidency. He, his followers and his henchmen are too dangerous and evil. They will transform this country if they get the chance. We dont want to be a part of that.
Were not rich but were comfortable financially. Our vague plan is to sell everything and move to one of the countries that have so-called golden visas whereby you can get fast-tracked for dual citizenship if you buy a home and have your own healthcare. I recognize that this is not an option for many people.
I cannot imagine living here if the country goes full- MAGA.

(1,449 posts)And have been in touch with an ex who is in government. I am getting all of my things lined up. This is not just for Trump. It is because when my hubby came down with cancer, we realized in a place where we are not cared about enough to provide healthcare, we could lose everything. Canada has universal healthcare. Things may be expedited if Trump is voted in. Having lived there and having dual citizenship, I can get back in. They make it harder for foreign spouses. At any rate, yes, I will move. I already getting all of my stuff lined up to do so.

(3,106 posts)I recently had dinner with friends who are Canadian. He is of German decent and after listening briefly to my concerns about TSF equating him to Hitler and the plight of women he told me
.there is nothing I can do to stop him. Hitler will win. He basically mocked me for my concern. Needless to say it knocked the wind out of me. Seven people at the table
no one said a word in my defense.
I understand about your duel citizenship as my friend and business partner has duel citizenship. Ive begged him to get out of here while he can but he didnt want to leave his friends. Over the last ten years we have watched Canada, the undercurrents of Q are ignored by the average citizen. They feel safe and think that nothing like our disaster can happen there. This being said the wife of Mr. Hitler said that after the trucker invasion last year that group has stolen the Canadian flag and continue riding around with the flags flying from the backs of their pickup trucks. She is mad about that! Kind of ironic that the same thing goes on down here and our flag was absconded with years ago. One of my woke Canadian friends checks in regularly with me and he said he recently found out that two of his friends are card carrying Qs. I wish you luck if you go. This is all a giant mess. In my opinion Canada is not far enough away. If this country blows its gonna be big. I wouldnt be anywhere near the US border.

(1,449 posts)I plan on moving to as small a village as I can get. I want to go to town once, maybe twice a month for groceries. If Trump is somehow elected, it will move my time table up. I am not moving to avoid Qis. I am moving to first and foremost get free healthcare. Secondly, as a woman I do not want to be a second class citizen.
With the chronic pain I am in. The legalized marijuana will no doubt help me. Can they change their healthcare and the legalization? Of course, but I will work with what is there now. I am obese. If I have a heart attack down here, I will be homeless.
That really hit home when hubby was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
Hope22
(3,106 posts)My heart goes out to you and your husband. My friend was uncertain if he could have jumped right into the healthcare system having not paid in over the years. Have you gotten written confirmation on that? I hope you find a place and it all works out. I know that senior living is way less expensive as well as the healthcare offered.
usedtobedemgurl
(1,449 posts)I have had to check in so many things but have not checked on healthcare as such. I researched it may take a few minutes to get a GP. I know when I have gone back to visit I have received free, or almost free, healthcare not even living there. At one point my foot went through a glass window. They took out the glass and cleaned my foot. I walked away paying $15 for crutches I was allowed to keep. I also went back to my old GP and was treated for something. That also was free. I have not heard of them charging. And I do have paperwork stating despite me having duel citizenship, I was sworn in as a Canadian citizen. But I cannot imagine them letting someone lose their house or life savings over a heart attack or stroke or most anything else.
When you have health problems, the last thing you want to do is worry about money. Money has hung o er our head since hubby was diagnosed. Thankfully, he has insurance but they can decide it is too expensive and stop paying.
Thank you for your kind words. I really just want to be in a place that seems to treat their citizens humanely.

(8,558 posts)Our careers are here and we're in the last decade of them. My daughter is in college. Hard to pick up and move under those conditions.
TBH, we're white, upper income folks. We're atheists, but that's not obvious. We'll be fine. I'm more worried about my daughter. She wants out of red state hell as soon as she can. She's smart, and a talented artist (Getting a BFA, intends to be a tattoo artist). Her long-time boyfriend is a genius. Wants to enter academia (in a blue state) or go to law school. They could possibly relocate abroad in a few years.

(4,282 posts)As we are dual Irish/US citizens and have lived in Ireland and England before. It is not cheap to live in Europe, but we talk about the possibility frequently. Several countries are appealing.
róisín_dubh
(11,924 posts)in Ireland. I'm 3rd generation, but of course my father's birth wasn't registered (as he was eligible to be) when I was born (my grandparents' births were registered). However, Ireland does allow some 3rd gens to gain citizenship, but not all (my sister can based on when she was born, but I fall outside this random window). My dad is submitting his ancestry citizenship application in May and then I'll see what happens. I'll be working with a couple of folks to file a petition to allow all 3rd generation people of Irish descent to apply for ancestry citizenship. It may go nowhere, but I'll never know unless I try. I'm fortunate that I work in the legal profession and have a law and history background, so the research involved is no problem. It's getting someone to listen to the case that's the issue.
If all else fails, I can apply via my mum's side in Italy. But thanks to Brexit that does me no good in England.
edhopper
(35,049 posts)so I keep that as an option.

(11,924 posts)I already live abroad. Moved temporarily to the UK at 43. Came back about a year later to settle some things and was still a bit on the fence. The passage of a campus carry bill in the state where I lived and taught a very politically charged subject sealed the deal. I resigned my university teaching position (no small feat, considering the years of study and labour I'd put in), got a job in the UK and moved. I just got a 5 year visa and after that, I'll have my green card (the equivalent in the UK). If I had to move back to the US, I'd only move home to the northeast.
It was neither easy or cheap to do this. But it has been worth it so far, minus missing my family and friends.
Now, to be fair, every country has its warts, shitty politicians, policies and people. The Tories are appallingly bad, but they're likely on their way out.

(5,127 posts)If they either convene a conference to rewrite (or the Insurrectionist does so unilaterally), Mrs Best and I will be exploring expat options. Both she and I have ZERO desire to live under any authoritarian regime.
Initially thinking either Nova Scotia or BC as expat locations. We are about a day's drive from Ontario so that would also be an option if things here really went sideways. I would also look at Ireland or Iceland, but I'm thinking if the Insurrectionist is in the WH, Vlad and his Orcs will likely make a move into Central and Western Europe (after finishing off Ukraine), and his Assets in the WH and Congress will let him do it. I really would not want to be anywhere in or near Europe if that happens.
In a protracted conflict, I can see Vlad potentially targeting Iceland in an attempt to lock up the North Atlantic seas and skies from shipping and air cargo transport to the UK and Western Europe.

(3,727 posts)my great grandparents had already moved to the U.S. before my Dad was born, so that rules that out. My Italian grandparents moved to the US in 1914 and 1916, but if they were naturalized before my Mom was born which seems likely the Italian citizenship is off the books for me too.
Maybe if Pope Francis is still in charge he will find a way to get asylum for some of the more progressive or lapsed(me) Catholics, as he is not a fan of American Bishops or Trump, but that's a pipe dream.
I am not wealthy, I am a senior citizen,am on disability, and have a lot of health issues, so it's not likely I could get citizenship elsewhere. Plus I refuse to abandon my dog and cat. I don't know what I will do, if the worst case scenario happens, because I really don't want to be forced into having only one other option, if it does.
I really hope someone has alternate options to choose from before then.

(52,357 posts)Involved in getting my sister and myself dual citizenship in !Italy since she is the one who did all the work a few years ago. I do know that my mother and my grandmother were born in the US. My sister said it was complicated and she is used to dealing with stuff like this since she is a lawyer.
BlueKota
(3,727 posts)I don't know because I am not familiar with Italian law, but I did read on line, that if a person's grandparents had become naturalized U.S. Citizens before their children were born, neither those children nor their off spring would be able to claim dual citizenship of the U.S. and Italy.

If we all flee, especially those with money and an education and health, that will for sure be the end to this great experiment of democracy. If America goes down, there will be nowhere to hide. I would shame my dead father and his brothers who went off to WWII without a second thought, if I ran away, thinking only of myself.
