Just curious. I used to get my McD's burgers at 2 for $3. No more... I miss those days. They are still cheaper than Burger King, which I prefer, but is farther. And KFC is ridiculous, but I pay it because their chicken tastes wonderful. They had good wings, too, but KFC is quick to discontinue things that don't sell. They had Corn on the Cob once...
At any rate...

(1,859 posts)But the hamburgers I do eat range from 7$ to 11$. The 11$ one is 3/4's of a pound.
The fast-food ones I eat are either Habit Burger, 5 Guys, or Frosty Queen.

(23,613 posts)My husband got a burger with cheese and curly fries. I got a butter bun burger and an egg roll. It was $31 dollars. I was shocked it was so expensive. That said they did offer a $3.99 burger with the basic stuff. After eating part of this burger I remembered why I rarely go to fast food chains!
dobleremolque
(919 posts)a dab each of ketchup and mustard, with a single pickle slice in a plain bun? Those were 35¢ each when I started eating "burgers;" maybe $1.99 nowadays.
Or is a "burger" a couple of quarter lb. beef patties, with cheese, lettuce, pickle, tomato, onion, placed in a 3-tier bun seasoned with sesame seeds? $1.99 in the wayback times; easily $8.00 now.
Add the "meal" option with beverage and fries, and "go large", and you can easily demolish the better portion of a $20 bill. For one person.
I like the intent of your survey, but it is is kind of a "how high it 'up'" type of question.

(6,279 posts)Some people prefer the premium burgers. Some of us go for quantity over quality.
I have to admit that paying $10-12 for a 3/4 lb burger is reasonable, given how much a quarter pounder costs.
I will add a bar.
TexasBushwhacker
(20,735 posts)That's a 3 oz patty with cheese, pickles, onions, ketchup and mustard.
Using the the app, I can get 2 quarter pounders with cheese for $5. That goes for Big Macs and 10 chicken nuggets too.

(534 posts)My 2 high school boys who both recently were offered full ride D1 football scholarships both smash a couple whoppers after their powerlifting sessions. They are both smart and understand that they cant eat that crap once they are done with their football.

(24,337 posts)a bit, as well as Taco Bell stuff, but I slammed the doors shut on this expensive 'fast food' that seems to have no end in sight, for the constant onslaught of price increases.
That's okay w/ me/us, I've been fixing more meals at home, fixing our own footlongs, and other 'long' sandwiches, etc. And just getting tired of 'hamburgers', although once in a great while, two whoppers (one for each of us), when we used to get six or so sandwiches (keep the others on hand for later meals), but no longer.
Once you get into the routine, it's not so hard.
Lee's once in a while (six months or so), but the livers and gizzards that I get, are so greasy, and being organ meats, aren't so good for you.
Arby's I do like, and I haven't been able to totally recreate their sliced beef, which I love, so I do tend to frequent Arby's more.
Substitutes: Crock pot meals, w/ either dried beans of some type, a little meat, or just plain veggies (soups). Cold meals include cottage cheese, which is pretty good. A 1/2 of one of these large containers of cottage cheese makes two meals for me.

(6,279 posts)I think what troubles me is that even though McD's is horrible, fattening food, it was also something that people could afford when they needed to feed a family quickly and cheaply.
McD's also responded to complaints be providing options like apples and milk to their happy meals.
The whole thing troubles me.
What we need is well-paying jobs in other industries that don't have such a drastic impact on food prices.

(2,317 posts)A McDonalds quarter pounder with the basic toppings is $4.99. I think its around $7.99 for a meal that includes fries and a soda. I prefer Chick-fil-A though. Can get a chicken sandwich meal for around the same price.
Im a big fan of Five Guys but have to say the prices are outrageous. Chipotle is expensive but probably a better value than places like McDonalds.
LudwigPastorius
(11,084 posts)I just looked up the prices at the 5 Guys near me, and a cheeseburger with regular fries is $17.50 before tax.
Fortunately, there's a family diner near me that makes a mean burger & fries, and it's about 9 bucks cheaper than that.
yellowdogintexas
(22,819 posts)enough for two people. Sometimes I get a drink but often just get water.
If we both get a drink, it's around $20 for the two of us.
A little burger is plenty!!! I don't know about all Five Guy locations but the one near us is very generous with the fries. I could not eat a regular burger and a regular fries there.

(553 posts)After all, who really cares about these workers? They can hold down two jobs to survive! If you think burgers are too expensive, cook them yourself or buy something else. Dont take it out on other Americans who deserve better too.
TexasDem69
(2,317 posts)And workers at McDonalds shouldnt make the same as workers at a high end steakhouse. Unless you want a Big Mac to cost the same as a steak.

(1,733 posts)with a McDouble or a McChicken from McDonalds. Both are about $3 and are plenty of food for me. You can still get fast food cheap - if you refrain from all the sides and other add-ons, which are generally nutritionally terrible anyways.

(26,669 posts)(Clicked "premium" but I'm not sure that's what this is.)
My other local burger place is $9.95 for the one I order.
I really only go to other fast food burger places when I'm traveling, so don't pay much attention to the prices...
ProfessorGAC
(70,620 posts)...they always have 2 Whopper Juniors for $5.
Or 2 Whoppers for $7.
They have other luxury & match deals, but they never include the fish sandwich, which is what my wife likes.
So, I'd have to say $2.50 is what we'd pay if we bought burgers, which is seldom. Cheaper & better to make them ourselves.
NickB79
(19,663 posts)Hamburger is $4/lb, so $1-$1.25 of meat.
I'll buy a 10 lb tube, make 30-40 patties at once, and freeze them. 10 min on the grill.

(5,300 posts)and that is the only time.
It has to be a veggie or impossible burger and prices at the airport are ...well, scary.
I have to be extremely hungry and stuck between flights to even remotely consider it, if no other options are appealing.
on edit when in other cities and stuck in hotels late at night one pays even more on the limited room service menu. I have had to do that once or twice. I just can't sleep if I need to eat something. I hate paying those prices though. there are limited choices for travelers.

(30,625 posts)I'm talking "fast food", not gourmet fast food, not hearty fast food or sit down places: .Burger Boy ~ Local chain ($5.45), Whataburger ($5.59) Sonic ($5.20), Burger King ($5.89), Dairy Queen ($5.50)...These burgers are just enough to knock off starvation and they have lettuce and tomato. Not the best, but this is the stuff I get when I'm driving around and suddenly starvation occurs.
This is in San Antonio.

(860 posts)Since this chain was sold, the quality has gone down hill. The patty is like cardboard. A Whataburger Jr patty is about the size of a sausage patty. Nope.
Like so many others, we simply dont buy burgers anymore. We bbq burgers every Friday night if the weather permits. Chili cheeseburgers rule at my house. Love it.

(36,964 posts)Wendy's has been selling the Dave's Single for $1 and a Dave's Double for $2 on their app for the whole month of March
on their app. Arby's has two fish sandwiches or two roast beef for $6 for weeks. Just last week I got a Cobb salad and a senior drink for Free on the Wendy's app. Yesterday I got a Dave's Double and a senior drink for $2 total.

(11,165 posts)I have had some amazing burgers for $12, and a few mediocre burgers for $15+. I don't do this very often, but prefer a really good burger to one from a fast food chain (tho will try local fast food chain burgers if passing through on a road trip--like a green chili-cheese burger when traveling through NM).

(2,332 posts)Mixed with Lipton's onion soup mix and Worcestershire sauce, a bit of pepper and garlic added in. My grandmother made burgers that way, and sometimes I whip up a batch, if I'm tired of ordinary burgers.
The only time I ever ate at Applebee's, the burger was the only menu item that looked edible. Soon as I bit into it, I was like--that's a Nan burger, but with chintzier ingredients.

(9,742 posts)Just the right size, with the same fresh pickles and onions as the bigger burgers. $5 (right now) Biggie Bag gets you one of these, 4 nuggets, small fries and a small drink. So cheap I can afford a Frosty too.

(1,564 posts)Whopper Meal, small size $12.79! Won't be doing that again. I can buy a rotisserie chicken for $10.00 and make four meals from it.

(9,908 posts)select meats called the 5 for $20. These generally are meats that have a 2 days from now expiration date on them. I place the meat in the freezer until I'm ready to use it.
There's a selection of several different meats but I usually purchase the ground beef. I can make 4 patties from the ground beef packs which is plenty for the 2 of us at home.
I don't eat at fast food joints as it's impossible to accommodate my dietary restrictions.
My usual average price for a burger at home is $5. I also slice tomatoes and use the sliced tomatoes as the "bun".
If I want chicken, I usually make Chicken Catoirre with diced sauted green bell peppers, sliced mushrooms and crushed tomato sauce, plus seasoning. Sometimes I might add gluten free rotini pasta to the Catoirre but that doesn't happen very often.
The last time I ate at a regular restaurant I got food poisoning, this happened back in early February.
I'd prefer just to eat at home.

(39,060 posts)I don't think that's the price at all Burger Kings.
McDonalds around here offer Beyond Meat burgers.
I look forward to the time when the most popular fast food burgers are not made from cattle, and those burgers that are come from cattle treated humanely and raised in a sustainable manner.
Inexpensive ground beef is not a human right.

NanaCat
(2,332 posts)Because no fast food restaurants offers hamburgers made with keto buns or dairy free cheese. It's the rare sit-down restaurant that does. Any that did offer such a burger would probably charge $15+ for it. And that's before getting to sides and drinks, too.
I can make a burger that fits my needs at home for less than $4.
I'm staying home.

(36,392 posts)...so when I buy burgers it's usually at a table service restaurant with all the usual toppings and fries on the side. With a soda and a good tip that's usually in the $20-ish range, plus-or-minus. I only eat one about two or three times a year. This thread will probably cause me to have one for lunch today, lol.
