Trump isn't the problem. It's the nasty people who vote for him. There are a lot of people who are as demented and selfish and stupid as trump. But no one is voting for them for president.

It's not the incoherent rambling of an individual with deteriorating cognitive abilities(though there are plenty of examples that sure seem to indicate it's an issue), it's that he makes shit up on the fly without having any real knowledge of the "issue" at hand. It's all of these anecdotal bullshit stories of him wowing the experts with his intuitive understanding of all things. He starts off with a made-up story of some un-named business or person struggling with the "tyranny" of government mandates, or, if we're being honest, long-term goals. He then asks a question of such profundity, that these individuals, companies, and/or experts are left speechless by his absolute brilliance. Finally, the story closes with them either praising his inexplicable knowledge of a highly technical or scientific topic, or standing astounded by his brilliant, never-before-thought-of question. It's a cut and paste formula that he tries to fill with whatever boogie man he wants to focus on at that moment.
PatSeg
(52,471 posts)And we've seen him do it so many times that it is predictable. He doesn't have the vocabulary, expertise, or creativity to keep doing this over and over again. Meanwhile, no one challenges him.
He reminds me of a young child making up a story on the fly. If you don't interrupt them, they go to truly unbelievable places with their lie, often unable to stop themselves.

So I said, 'Let me ask you a question.'
And he said, 'Nobody ever asked this question.' And it must because of MIT, my relationship to MIT. Very smart.
Later
And I said, "So there's a shark 10 yards away from the boat. 10 yards. Or here, do I get electrocuted, if the boat is sinking, water goes over the battery, the boat is sinking. Do I stay on top of the boat and get electrocuted, or do I jump over by the shark
and not get electrocuted?*
Because I will tell you, he didn't know the answer. He said,
'You know, nobody's ever asked me that question.'

(8,529 posts)Seriously, someone is going to demand that he be evaluated for competency to stand trial, never mind be candidate. Can you imagine the blowback and hoop-la among the faithful and the yet to be indicted when a judge requires such an evaluation?
His family members ought to be doing this but I don't see how any of them are able, functional themselves, or interested in confronting him. That leaves the coterie of fanatics, manipulators, "lawyers", and hangers-on who orbit the Orange Menace.
Meanwhile the entire RW Co-ordinated Campaign is rushing down the Autocracy Road as fast as they can, taking the true believers, the GOP national, state and local campaigns, and the MSM with them.
IMO it will take another major medical issue to intervene in this. He's already showing serious signs of serious fatigue and long term stress. No one knows what his real health is, although many have speculated. Which kind of makes who he picks for Vice another issue altogether.

(8,529 posts)It is anything but gradual at this point.
I was a caregiver for my Mother and my Mother-in-Law who both went this way. He's sliding into a serious decline of function, not merely the word-salad shit he pushed out 4 years ago. For anyone who's cared for someone going through this kind of cognitive decline the evidence practically screams at you.
The only reason he's not in care right now is that the people propping him up can't say NO to him. They have too much invested in him being a radical chaos agent to recognize how dangerous this is for him, and everyone else.
As horrible a creature as he is, he is also genuinely leaving this world, and heading farther out of orbit.

(105,785 posts)I mean, that was profoundly stupid, but everyone can see it's meaningless nonsense - someone who likes the sound of his own voice and thinks others do too (sadly true with the crowd he gets). But this "go out 70 miles and you go at 2 knots" bullshit? He was trying to get people to believe that.
"I said 'how long does it take?'" Well, durrr, it would take 35 hours to get out there, if they're nautical miles, and if it were remotely true. "Many". For fuck's sake, this is Baldrick-level stuff:
But that shows what the "relationship to MIT" is worth. Fuck all. Just like his relationship to the truth is fuck all.

(22,316 posts)I read that, and thought what the hell is a mercury engine? With, Trump, you never know, but I thought he might be talking about some kind of imaginary technology that he had pulled out of the murky recesses of his posterior. So I decided to Google before commenting, and I found out that Mercury is actually the name of a company that makes outboard motors for boats: https://www.mercurymarine.com/us/en
It's just a small thing, but it cracks me up. It's like every random word or snippet of info that he hears gets churned up and becomes an ingredient in the word salad that comes tumbling out of his mouth.

(2,685 posts)Seriously, if you fish, the odds are good you are familiar with the boat motors that can let you tool around on a lake for hours powered by a charged up car battery. At full speed you can empty a good battery in a couple of hours, but if you use more controlled speeds, you can pretty much use it to drive a small boat around all day.
For that matter you can google solar powered yachts and get some pretty cool results. If I had the money and if my wife hadn't seen any of the North Sea fishing videos, https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ybvVgAAfFUQ I would love to live on one of these. https://silent-yachts.com/
