(8,657 posts)81% say it had no effect on their choice for president
14% said that it made them reconsider but didnt change their mind
5% said it changed their minds about whom to vote for, but this was made up of roughly equal shares of Joe Biden and Donald Trump supporters
And this from a polling population that TILTED REPUBLICAN!

(9,612 posts)Hillary Clinton would be finishing up her 2nd term and Tom Kaine would be the Nominee. Clinton CLOBBERED Trump in 3 straight debates.
There is more than enough time for things to turn around!

(4,557 posts)Have their mind made up before the candidates come out. They will vote party line no matter who gets the nomination.
20% of the voters being persuaded in some way by a debate is significant when a small percentage of swing voters decide who wins.

(1,286 posts)80 didn't reconsider
15% did but didn't change their mind
5% changed their mind, evenly split between Trump and Biden.
That means there was 0 change.

(6,812 posts)One of the reasons why I didn't bother watching.
Bush and Obama had terrible first debates on their second terms. Why? Because its choreographed that way for the incumbent. Debates are not about substance anymore and all about body language, staging, etc. Knowledge of a subject is important, but only to the point you seem credible. But the rest is all theatrics. The opponent could be completely right, but the performance determines everything, so you can be completely right and still lose the debate.
Since there is one more debate, that's the one you want to put the hammer to, as its the one everyone remembers. Non-incumbents have it harder as they have to dominate every debate (see Reagan and Clinton). I noted that some here said that Biden seemed "hoarse" but was normal after the debate, believe me, that was intentional. When he's next on that stage via debate, town hall, etc. he's going to dominate.
Just how the game is played. Has no one here been to any Toastmaster meetings? Its mostly about how to perform and strategize in a debate.

(15,522 posts)The freak-out is understandable and expected, but it will not matter in the end.

(113,131 posts)and no fact checking, at all.
These things should matter. Corrupt major media make sure they don't because the owners want tax cuts.

(14,633 posts)TFG and most Republican politicians do not even understand the concept of debate as a result of decades of brainwashing with hard right-wing dogma. Most of us know that from experiences of trying to rationalize with everyday Republican voters.
I could not watch this event because TFG's voice makes me instantly nauseous and I knew he would do nothing but lie, project and deceive. It's a farce to label this event a debate.
Our nation will continue it's downward spiral away from democracy so long as the GOP and their massive media machine continue to be allowed to lie and deceive our public with impunity.
KY rant done......

(24,915 posts)No one should give it any attention other than to seed campaign ads with Trump's own words.
People who are anti- Biden wouldn't have changed their minds if he'd lit the roof on fire.
People who are anti- Trump are too intelligent to take their eyes off the ball.
People who can't decide are too stupid for words to make a difference at this point.
