(61,033 posts)I've been following Newsom for many years and I don't find him to be superficial at all. He is a smart man with great ideas and not afraid to put them out there. And yes, I find him really good looking as well.

(52,130 posts)Sorry, I've been a big supporter of Newsom since 2004 and it wasn't because of his looks. He was quite unlike most politicians and he was very progressive in his policies.

(25,900 posts)"hasn't done without" doesn't automatically mean he doesn't have room in his heart for compassion, empathy - putting himself in other people's shoes.
I do not know bc I haven't paid that much attention to him.

He was mayor for two terms not long ago.

(24,240 posts)FDR was from a truly wealthy and connected family (much more so than Gavin), and the bottom 99% of us would be in much worse shape than without him. He dedicated his life to working and poor people.

That said, I really like Gavin Newsom. He is a great liberal voice who has some incredible progressive ideas. Back when he was mayor of San Francisco, we thought he'd run for president one day. I think that is what he is preparing for now, possibly in 2028.

(5,370 posts)Also, I'm not so sure Newsom would do well in the Blue Wall states. I live in the Midwest. A lot of folks are down on California here. The long conservative push to define California as a hellhole people are fleeing in droves has worked well. I love Cali. But a lot of folks who've never been near the place buy into the hype. Newsom has not gotten positive press in recent years. He got raked over the coals for the French Laundry incident. And the recall effort was national news that made it all the way out here. He's not going to appeal to blue collar types or seniors, I don't think. Comes across as slick, rightly or wrongly.
I'd vote for the Dem nominee no matter what. I can't see Newsom drawing lots of undecideds where it counts. And Trump has lots of appeal. We barely beat him last time. It's going to be a very, very tough fight.
brush
(61,033 posts)All but the despicable anti-vaxxer of course.
Newsom has a record or solid Dem policies of caring. He'll do ok if he runs. Our problem will be having too many great candicates in '28...Harris, Newsom, Whitmer, and whoever else emerges.
I might add btw, all of the above are attractive people. That never hurts a political candidate.

(10,912 posts)... "Presidential charisma" for sure. He's my Governor and we're very happy with him, here. Of course, he'd be good for the country, too. I love his ability to talk to FOX "News" folks, like word stumbling Sean Hannity. Gavin also responds so well to questions about replacing Joe Biden. He's been asked many times, and he always supports his President!
