CNNs carefully considered FRAMING & LIGHTING design effectively conveyed the intended perceptions of fragility vs. dominance in visual composition.
Biden was filmed in profile, looking pale as a ghost.
Trump was filmed straight on, not looking his usual shade of tangerine, but more like marmalade.
Biden is a man of honor, integrity, resilience, and resolve.
A Trump is a Trump is a Trump

CNN did this.It was a set up from the start.

(95,901 posts)CNN throughout the debate referred to trump as president. We have one President and that is Joseph Biden.
That was a deliberate slap in the face to every Democrat. tfgs title is Mr Trump.

Plenty to criticize CNN on - but I don't think that's one.

During those debates tfg wasnt a convicted felon. He is now. It was Faux Snooze, not a lot of intelligence there.
Self Esteem
(2,248 posts)It's just unusual now because we've never had a former president run in our lifetime and that former president is, as you say, a convicted felon and you'd think that should be his title lol
ForgedCrank
(3,029 posts)referred to as "Former President Trump", which is what he is. Joe Biden was referred to as "President Biden".

(95,901 posts)They kept slipping and calling him President.

(3,029 posts)also common practice. President Obama is still referred to as such whenever he is introduced. There is no mad conspiracy here.
I thought the debates were pretty well done.

(3,029 posts)what that would sound like, a moderator asking a question like this:
"Mr. Convicted Felon Rapist, will you accept the election results?"
Really? Would the public view that as professional? Our side would be the one to suffer the consequences of something so ridiculous.
I think we probably have other more important issues to address than what title a moderator uses to address someone on TV, especially when they used the correct ones in the first place.

Dont play games with me. The felon should have been addressed as Mister. Period. He is about to be sentenced for 34 felonies that he was found guilty for. Another court in Georgia for election interference, then another in Florida, the most important case on record, espionage. Our countries most sensitive data.
No clue why you find this all amusing.

(3,029 posts)He was addressed properly. Just because flies get on my nerves doesn't mean I should sit around and pull their wings off. It's the same with Trump. I may not like him, but going around demanding that others not use his proper title just to satisfy my own hatred isn't something I agree with.

(17,938 posts)format. I got the impression the moderators were meek towards Trump so he wouldn't start going off on them, calling them fake news or directing his uncontrollable abuse at them.
IMO, it was the moderator's weakness towards Trump that made it look like some of what the tweet describes. His lies were such nonsense-- the abortion BS for just one item. How on earth could a news station let such utter crap go unchallenged. It did make me wonder if it was preferential treatment.
That wasn't a debate about our government, policies, or laws. It was an episode of the Trump show. Shame on a news station for airing such lies
sheshe2
(95,901 posts)They showed him deference that he did not deserve. He is a liar, cheat and fraud. He is a convicted felon running for the highest office in the land.
The man deserves no respect. He is awaiting his sentencing in two weeks. I repeat, a man running for president is to be sentenced for 34 felony convictions in a week before the Maga convention.
You cant make this shit up.
There were numerous times he was asked a question and he went into a previous topic and/or meandered into one of his choice. Only once did I hear them steer him back immediately.

(6,605 posts)It has been years since I have seen Trump's face any color other than tangerine or yellow orange. His make up last night was perfect - it made him look healthy. On the other hand - Biden came out looking a white-grey color - it was shocking. The video of Biden right after the debate at the Waffle House showed his skin a completely different color as do the videos of his performance today. My understanding is that the tv station does the make up. How did they make Biden look so white grey and dead looking without knowing what they were doing?
Irish_Dem
(79,818 posts)And ardent Democratic.
She cannot believe that they did not give Joe a bit of color before the debate.
She says a bit of blush and some eyebrow color would have been perfect.
And just a bit of color to his hair.
I am of Irish descent and we have lovely skin, but we are casper the ghost
without a bit of color on our faces. Then we are beautiful!
Without it, casper.
You raise a good point. Why did Trump come out looking tan and healthy?
Biden looks bad?
Was it a set up?

(8,103 posts)stressed, like his blood pressure was elevated. Coupled with his scowl, he looked like he might pop a gasket or something.
He has been changing his look all year, from orange to some kind of pink or beige. He got himself a new hairdo, and quite frankly, he looks better, anyway. No doubt plenty of makeup is involved, but he has time for that, considering he isn't as busy as President Biden. I hate the bastard, but he is improved. I think that is why he looked better, and it is not a CNN conspiracy. He's probably on a diet, too, but hasn't given up fast food.

(34,015 posts)I don't think Biden was wearing any.
Most presidential candidates don't wear it:
Romney (yes), Kerry? (maybe) W Bush (no), McCain (no) Obama (not needed) Clinton (no) Gore (?) Reagan (yes...saw him in person) Carter (no) Old Bush (no), Nixon (maybe), LBJ (no)

(Good god, getting old sucks) I don't know if Trump is losing lashes or I just don't notice it. I do notice it on Joe. Not much can be done about eyelash loss on men, except false eyelashes, Latise or eyemakeup. We don't need to go there..LOL_

(5,455 posts)the cameras, I think President Biden looked sick (he had a cold). And, I notice that he has just started to keep his mouth open with an awkward look on his face. That is not a sign of being unfit for office. It's a sign of age. I know many people in their 80's who have
bad days but are smart, quick-thinking and fare better than lots of younger folks.
Although, I did wonder how his voice had recovered so quickly the next day while suffering from the cold! I want some of that medicine! It works! I love President Biden and he has my vote no matter how old he is.

(7,652 posts)to fact check Trump's words every time he opened his mouth.
1 minute of Trump, 5 minutes of fact checking and moderators trying to explain to Trump his made up 'facts' weren't appropriate for a serious debate.
Not being critical or anything, but CNN did a bad job not doing that.
In short, it wasn't a debate at all.
Just more of the same from TFG.

Liberal In Texas
(15,983 posts)he should have been. Many times he was addressing the moderators who were on the right side of the camera. On TV you have to look at the audience - the camera not people in the room. Trump has had years and years of experience doing this. And Biden should have been coached to do it too.
Speaking of the Biden debate team: They made a big - huge - mistake asking for Biden to be on the right side of the set and therefor the right side of the "double box" during the broadcast. TV stations and networks all know that you put your on-air talent, anchors, hosts almost always on the left side and the guest on the right. The left side is a position of authority, the position where the questions are being asked the position of the person who is the leader of their show. If you don't believe me just watch any local or network broadcast.

I assumed the coin toss determined that Biden was on the right and Trump on the left. Unless Biden won the coin toss, and decided to be on the right?
Liberal In Texas
(15,983 posts)Mr. Biden's team won a coin toss, CNN reported, which allowed them to determine either who gets to make the closing argument or where the candidates stand on the stage. The president's team chose his position on the stage, selecting the lectern on the right. That decision tees up Trump to cap the night with closing arguments. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/first-presidential-debate-biden-trump-structure-prep/

(1,930 posts)idiotic idea. From looking at those pics the camera was square to both of them. The stills show Biden looking left and right but no stills show Chump doing that, which I'm sure he had to have done a couple of times but I didn't watch so I don't know.
There was no secret hidden lighting to show Biden looking "older" either.
It is epic trolling when these paranoid delusions pop up it seems just to get the Dems, especially people here all in an uproar.

Did they make him say the wrong things those times?
He had a horrible debate. This isn't on CNN. We need to stop acting like everything was just fine with that debate and anything seen as wrong was someone else's fault. Can he come back from this? Of course. Trump had the 2nd worst debate showing in history. But the problems need to fall on Biden. Just stop.

(96,882 posts)There was a straight on shot of both candidates, and their heads were at the same height.
What happened is that Biden talked to the moderators and Trump talked to the camera.
