Carville Responds to Biden Campaign Using His Name to Fundraise After He Predicted President Will Drop Out of Race

Last edited Sat Jun 29, 2024, 10:08 PM - Edit history (1)

President Joe Biden’s campaign trolled James Carville on Saturday after the Democratic strategist predicted Biden will not be on the ballot in November. The president made a poor showing in Thursday’s presidential debate with Donald Trump, with Biden tripping over his words several times while also declaring, “We finally beat Medicare.” Biden’s performance was so bad, that liberal cable news pundits suggested he be replaced. The New York Times even called for him to drop out.

In a report published by Axios on Saturday, Carville predicted Biden will not be on the Democratic ticket. “I never thought this was a nifty idea,” he said. “He doesn’t have advisers. He has employees.” Paraphrasing a famous economist, he added, “That which can’t continue… won’t.”

The Biden campaign responded by texting supporters with a note purporting to be from Carville. “Hi, it’s James Carville,” it began. “I need you and Democrats everywhere to make a contribution to the Biden-Harris campaign ASAP. Help them defeat Donald Trump.” The text included a link to a fundraising webpage.

Tyler Pager of the Washington Post reached out to Carville about the message to ask for his reaction. “Of all the glitches they made, I guess this is pretty minor. It didn’t bother me as much as the debate,” he said. “It’s kind of weird to see your name go out to half a million people.”

ego is getting in the way Carville.

An open Convention would be suicidal, and all you are doing Carville is creating division.

From all indications the DEMOCRATS have no problem with Biden on the ballot.

The primaries are essentially over, and Carville should get off is high horse and either get on the train or get out of the way

8. Carville didn't "predict the President will drop out of the race."

There's no quote in the Axios piece to that effect. And what's with the weird title? What's the "Biden Oligarchy" referenced in the Axios gossip column?

Behind the Curtain: Biden oligarchy will decide fate

James Carville — the "Ragin' Cajun" who masterminded Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign in 1992, and now is a frequent TV pundit — will be 80 in October. He told us that if he appeared like Biden did during the debate, he'd want to be pulled off the tube.

"I never thought this was a nifty idea," Carville said of Biden's run. He said there are few people the president really listens to: "He doesn't have advisers. He has employees."

When we pressed Carville on whether he thinks Biden will be off the ticket by Election Day, he said he thinks so. He invoked a famous quote by the late economist Herb Stein, which Carville paraphrased as: "That which can't continue … won't.

11. It appears that Carville forgot that he gave the Biden campaign permission to use his name for fundraising.

From the WaPo story referenced in the Mediaite link:

Lauren Hitt, a Biden campaign spokesperson, said in a statement that Carville’s team “signed off on a robust fundraising package for our campaign including today’s message, and we’re grateful for everything he does to ensure that Joe Biden is re-elected to a second term.”

But Carville told The Post that he checked with his team, and they had no knowledge of it. The fundraising text, he said, “didn’t bother me as much as the debate.”

“Of all the glitches they made, I guess this is pretty minor,” he said. But he added: “It’s kind of weird to see your name go out to half a million people.”

Later Saturday night, the Biden campaign provided an email showing a representative for Carville approved the fundraising missives earlier this month.

12. It's so weird that Mediaite managed to quote the WaPo piece when Carville called the text a "glitch",

but totally forgot to quote WaPo when it said its reporters were shown the email authorizing the use of Carville's name for fundraising.

I guess tertiary source Mediaite didn't think readers would go to secondary sources WaPo and Axios to see what primary source Carville actually did and said.
