(1,343 posts)Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont said that only 1/3 of democrats support Biden staying in. He said the debate was the kicker. He would certainly vote for Biden but wishes the nominee would be someone else. Of course the interviewer did not ask well, who do you have in mind?.
So, is this figure of 1/3 coming from internal polling data?

Polls are only a snapshot of the moment.

(3,814 posts)There were no other major candidates running, as is the case with most incumbent presidents.
Biden should've passed the torch. We could've then selected a younger candidate - whether that turned out to be Harris or someone else.

(10,677 posts)What I mean to say is, I feel like the people who actually already have voted for the man, aren't being asked a damn thing, and my sense is (at least here on DU), that all of us are at least 80% for him staying in.
So where the fuck are these numbers coming from?
As an aside, it's not ALL OF US that took the crazy pills and are living in the Insulated Bubble...is it?

(1,231 posts)President Biden has done and is doing a great job as our President.
The numbers, all of them, demonstrate that.
He did poorly at the beauty contest which means next to squat
Even 538s polls have him up by 3 in the average of their polls right now.
So what gives? Nervous democrats who need to check the actual records and receipts before spewing nonsense on the board.
There are always nervous democrats.
This is a Murdoch narrative we should throw out so we can unify behind Joe and Kamala !!

(1,231 posts)I remember the average of polls (at RCP, I think) said President Obama was allegedly losing to Senator Romney in August and September before the election in 2012.
I also know mr trump has paid to change polls in his favor in the past.
What do polls mean before Labor Day? Polls can make you chicken little and they are as moot as any debate.
It does trouble me that polls claim many dont know our economy is humming much better than usual for a lot more of us.
I think we should shout how good everything is from the rooftops. We need our friends and family to know what is going on despite the lies aired daily on Sinclair so that democrats win up and down the ballot.
Crime is way down
The economy is growing and wages are raising faster than inflation
People are generally happy (except for Mr trump and co) we are a happy country right now. Ask around.
The world is relieved (the free and yearning to be free part of it) that Joe Biden is our president. These are very good things to bring to any table. So bring them
No matter who the candidate is the Republican candidates and experts and media will keep on lying and inventing nonsense.
We need to stand firm against the gop framing or be captured by it and lose ourselves ( imho )

(1,578 posts)The only time I think Trump led in 538s model in 2016 was right after the Republican convention, when he had like a 55% of winning for a few days. I dont recall him ever leading in 2020. Their last prediction gave Obama about a 91% chance of winning in 2012 if I remember correctly and made Nate famous when he called every state correctly (he even switched Florida to a very light blue the morning of the election).
Still, I am not trusting 538, Lichtman, or any other experts. I think David Pakman was the one who said this election has a sample size of n=1 when it comes to similar elections: weve never had a rematch of the same race four years later when both candidates have been presidents, we havent had a pair of candidates that are the oldest in history, nor one who is a convicted felon who tried to overturn the results of the previous election and is yet somehow ahead if the polls are to be believed. Oh and one whose party is trying to convince the winner of the primary to step aside. This truly is uncharted territory. And I think there will be plenty of more plot twists to come before (and possibly after) Election Day. When an assassination attempt is the headline news for about 48 hours you know this isnt normal.
This is not normal. Polling is bizarre too. Polls claim that President Biden has stolen the most reliable voters, older folks, from the republicans while I am also supposed to believe that young men of color are turning trump. Polls want me to believe that a large majority of us reject Trumps lies and lawlessness but will still see him re-elected. The polls are screwy and unreliable.
Nonetheless, the advantages of incumbency are obvious and have not vanished. Professor Lichtman has a better track record too than polls in mid-July.
Incidentally, President Biden is great at the job and the other guy was truly terrible.
It really is morning in America again. Can you not feel it in your everyday life?
Things are different no doubt; we are much much better off than we were four years ago.

(1,344 posts)This poll -- like all polls -- needs to be explained in context and it is all a hypothetical.
The poll found that one-third of democrats said they would prefer having another candidate running rather than Joe Biden.
It does not imply that they dislike Biden personally.
It does not imply that they aren't going to vote for him in November.
It does imply, in my opinion, that a lot of democrats are rightly scared about losing to that Ass-Hat and the fallout that it
would have on our country.
The same poll allegedly asked if they would vote for Biden in November if he were the candidate, and the response
was overwhelmingly positive, as in "YES" they would get out to vote and vote for Biden.
The Dems need to make a firm, final decision AND communicate that decision clearly, forcefully, and without
equivocation about President Biden -- NOW. The ambivalence and indecisiveness is hurting our chances, not
helping them. The rumor mill needs to be shut down. We appear to be confused and foolish. We can do better!

(25,040 posts)I support Biden staying in the race. Schumer has not come out against Biden. He and Jeffries, as leaders in their respective houses, have carried out their responsibilities to Biden and our party to keep Biden informed of where Congress stands. Jeffries said that the conversation was a good one. He and Schumer were acting as messengers, not as advocates for either side.
Jeffries has made public statements in support of Biden. He has not announced a change in his view.
Regardless of media pundit interpretation of the visit, for all we know, the 3 men could have discussed strategy for Biden's continued campaign.
DAngelo136
(318 posts)to make some things known. Since the issue is age, I suggest that should Biden lose ( I think it unlikely) then, there should be a purge of leadership who is also aged; Chuck Schumer is 73 years old, Nancy Pelosi is 84 years old, not to mention quite a few octogenarian congress critters presently sitting. If Joe goes; they go.

(90,371 posts)...Joe Biden has many more delegates than he needs to win the nomination on the first round at the convention.
That compares to a few detractors with their hands full of shit they're flinging around like that's a campaign or something.
There may well be headway made among the folks participating in the media fantasy election game in the media.
But no other Democrat is going to carry enough delegates into that convention to beat Joe Biden. Their only hope is for the him to agree to voluntarily become a lame duck in this race and in his presidency.

It's so stupidly obvious that the GOP and Putin are wetting themselves over the possibility of the encumbent just fading away.

Biden has plenty of time to overcome a phony media narrative.
Trump will always be a convicted felon/tax fraud/ adjudicated rapist, still facing multiple felony charges for trying to overturn the election with rioters who ransacked the Capitol, and theft of hundreds of classified documents that he refused to return, including some of the nation's most sensitive nuclear secrets.
This election is a binary choice with one candidate a convicted criminal and failed president, not just a referendum on Biden's successful presidency or his competency in office.
DAngelo136
(318 posts)That we are alone. The Democratic Donor Class, for whatever their reasons, don't want to listen to the people.
The so-called "movers & shakers" think they know best for the party, therefore the nation. I say, that they're wrong.
No matter what, WE THE PEOPLE, have the final say. No matter how many billions they have in the bank, they have the same number of votes...one. And there are more of US than there are of THEM.
They want to stamp their feet and get their way; 14 million people spoke, and that's it. We're ridin' with Biden. They can either get on and pitch in or get off and get out of the way.
I don't take counsel from political backbenchers, backstabbers, professional pundits with their unnamed sources, skeevy pollsters, and especially skeerdy cat political leaders who don't have the heart or the stomach for a fight. "These are times that try men's souls" wrote Thomas Paine. "The summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands now, deserve the thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered."
We are faced with the greatest existential threat to this democracy since The Civil War. Yes, there were fascists among us during World War 2, but their leader, was in Germany and even then, we were at war against them. But this is different; the call is coming from inside the house and it's The Republican Party led by their MAGA leader, Donald Trump.
Make no mistake, he and they are a threat. And I'm not being hyperbolic. They are reminiscent of the of the Black Shirts of Mussolini's fascist Italy, and he, their "Il Duce" wannabe. What's even more insidious, is the cooperation of the media in their exaltation of Trump to the point of fealty. And we've seen this movie before:
The media is acting as their stenographer rather than the watchdog to power. Of course, because of consolidation, 5 companies own 90% of the media outlets in the world.
But all hope isn't lost. Donald Trump, despite MAGA propaganda, isn't a popular candidate; he lost the popular vote twice. And in increasing numbers both times. And despite what the corporate, for profit media wants to convince you, Biden is far more popular than Trump. Despite the poor performance of Biden in the debate and Trump's near assassination attempt, both men are within 3 points of each other in various polls in June. And with the nonsensical Republican National Convention, and Trump's selection of J.D. Vance, it's very unlikely that they will gain any momentum toward November. So this IS a very winnable election for Biden/Harris. Biden has the record of performance, the confidence of a cohesive team and incumbency. Not to mention, a very capable and accomplished Vice President in Kamala Harris.
There isn't anything the summertime soldiers of the Democratic Party can do unless Joe wants to do it. He has control of the delegates, money in the bank and popular support. Not to mention a beatable adversary who is a convicted felon and whose associates are also convicted felons and reprobates. There are more of us than there are of them-never forget them. We come out; we win. It's as simple as that. Keep the faith.
