I don’t remember how exactly, but I know that I was still upset about the result of the 2004 election, and was looking for like minded people.

I was lurking before that. Became a member directly after the great site crash of 2008.

load 'ol Bart's page. I usually had time to go to the fridge, make a sandwich, do a quick check of the daily mail, grab a cold soda and come back and then it would be just finishing. That page was the best part of my afternoons.

back in the day. No high speed internet. 28kbit modem and then after a year or so my dial-up ISP was able to handle a 56. We thought we were in heaven.

I tried to contribute what I know, which is that Joe Biden is a good man. He won’t lie to us. He’s not gonna pull a bait and switch. I have found it to be a very good forum and I love everybody here

I hadn't gone on the computer before but a few months later I was so angry
and needed like mined people I finally figured out how to navigate my husband's gaming
PC while he was at work in july 2001 .

soon after I vollunteered as a moderator .. that was the day I learned how to copy and paste .

He mentioned it once and I said "Democratic what now?" He still mentions it on a fairly regular basis, often discussing specific posts and topics.

He doesn't seem as prolific a poster of late.

saw Democratic Underground. Very intrigued by that, took a look, lurked for years. Finally delurked about 2 ish yrs. ago.

Very glad I did.

Durning the early heat of the 2016 election my brother in law told me about this site. I was the a silent "reader" of the many well informed posts until I finally signed on board in October of 2022. One of the best decisions I've made the last few years. Thank you Hal!

I still remember people made fun of me, people said I should go into my own chamber, and DU used to warn me all the time. Come 2024, things have changed as GOP has become more radical. I was not in my own chamber then. That chamber has expanded into MAGA and we are in a big fight with them.

I was also warned by DU about posting against Democratic leaders. Boy, things have changed after the Manchin-Senema shit show. Now, very prominent Dem leaders are trying to take down our own President. It is almost impossible to not blame our own gutless party.

However, I am doing this because our Party needs to develop spine against a Nazi like MAGA and the Orange Cult FU is cutting me more slack.

One of the tell tale signs of breakdown is when the mainstream media starts to parrot King Trump. I am noticing how Van Jones, Katy Tur have started this. All signs of MS becoming a state propaganda machine. This is likely to result in the growth of DU and Meidastouch like medium. Trump may come after DU if he wins. We will see what happens.

To me, it was a dream come true. Well organized, mostly intelligent dialogue, informed people, mostly diverse perspectives, active and well trafficked, community standards that disposed of most personal attacks. Other sites are either not as active, or their website is disorganized with lots of empty space (Reddit), or allow ridiculous conspiracy theories, or don’t moderate personal attacks.

Competent moderators make a huge difference.

When I was very disgusted with the 2000 election results. It was a lifesaver as I needed someplace to vent. I have been hanging out ever since.

I found DU through links on Bartcop's page, more than 20 years ago. I still miss Bartcop, his site was my first stop every morning.

That was the "official" announcement of DU's existence. I'm listed as an original DUer on my profile, but actually didn't sign up until after 9/11. It took me awhile to come up with a name!

Lurked around starting the day after W's inaugural. Didn't join until 2016. Don't often have much to say or add to what the posters here have said. But this site is my therapy session every day.

I saw a reference to DU on a Keith Olberman board. KO was giving a lot of attention to the fight and that led me to the KOEB on DU. It was good to find like minded people.

to talk/read like minded opoinions after W....and after moving to Iowa from Illinois with two very small children.

Didn't post for a long time, but now, It's my home, complete with family members I don't always agree with.

Heck, a few I disagree with more often than not.

I used to be on a message board that supported the other side (in almost everything) and enjoyed sparring with the posters there. It was a third or fourth generation shoot off of the old MSNBC message boards that disappeared. My kids used to tease me for being over-engaged in my "Nazi Board".

I can only imagine that I came across DU doing a google search to find documentation to support my POV during some argument. I know I've been here for quite some time, but my account disappeared and I had to re-join. My old user name was Madam Mossfern.

I look at a few, found DU the most user-friendly from a tech nerd‘s point of view, if not always user-friendly from a people point of view. But I got used to it. The Russian troublemakers usually reveal themselves via the usual grammatical mistakes, and the nasty ones always drift away sooner or later.

i went looking for others who’d had that happen and found a post here by someone, a guy who was making cards of the criminals in the w admin. they did start letting me buy ads shortly thereafter.

Long time election integrity activist. So disappointed in 2000 “election” outcome. Looking for like minds … joined just before Jim Jeffords became independent.
Been here ever since. Grateful for insights, candor and support.

When I got here that first time from The Smirking Chimp I realized that DU was the site I had looked up in 2001 from the banner.

When GWB was elected. I feared the worst for our country, I had no idea this shit storm was coming.

While watching the towers fall again and again (in case there were any of us in NYC who had not yet acquired PTSD), a major TV anchor goes, “let’s see what they’re saying on Urban 75 and Democratic Underground”. I was immediately hooked.

For the first 5 years I primarily lurked here and posted on UB75. The threads here moved too fast (back then) and it was hard for me to engage in substantive conversation. The posting rate here is much slower now, so I post here instead. Besides, UB75 declined. We did, too, insofar as many wonderful posters don’t post here anymore. But this is home (for the last 22 years - I still don’t post very much, but I lurk every day).

That was about twenty years ago. Until that time, I had not been aware of DU.

I miss the Horse

I was beyond mad, enraged, despondent, screaming, etc. First I found a board "Democrats United" or something Democrats and went there. There I found Smirking Chimps and several other sites. I liked it there but it folded after about 6 months or so. Went back to the internet, found BuzzFeed then later found Democratic Underground. I liked this site the best so stayed here ever since. I was so distraught when the board went down for a few days! Thankfully the great people that run this fixed the issue. This really is my 2nd home.

Back in the day, Facebook pages "liked" other Facebook pages and page visitors could see what pages that a particular paged "liked".


I was a regular visitor to Occupy Democrats and I believe it was Lucid Nation???. Both obviously Democratic pages on Facebook.


I found Democratic Underground's Facebook page with the help of either Occupy Democrats or potentially Lucid Nation???, which I discovered DU was a forum where like minded Democrats, Liberals and Progressives could communicate and exchange ideas.


Disclaimer: It's been 14 years ago in my DU discovery so I don't exactly remember the other Facebook page name. Just like Joe Biden I can't remember every single name and I'm under 50 years old.

In 2004, Bartcop led me to DU and Media Whores Online... two sites we could use in these times...

I was volunteering at the time for John Kerry's campaign.

so long, my memory is a bit foggy, but I'm almost sure I originally found DU when googling about the Bush/Gore fiasco. It was a couple of years after the election if I am remembering correctly.

Found a link to EarlG's "Top 10 Conservative Idiots". Lurked for several months because I didn't have a home computer and it was risky doing this at work. Joined the following October.

Back in the time after Bush/Gore. So many sites used to list links on the side of their home pages. I came here to get the pulse of those like myself.

I then ran across DU a second time when I was looking for a pdf file with the agreed upon rules for the first Busy/Kerry debate because someone at a Democratic Party meeting at my local library recommended it. After that point, I started lurking here regularly, and in 2007, I registered an account and began posting.
