I still remember people made fun of me, people said I should go into my own chamber, and DU used to warn me all the time. Come 2024, things have changed as GOP has become more radical. I was not in my own chamber then. That chamber has expanded into MAGA and we are in a big fight with them.
I was also warned by DU about posting against Democratic leaders. Boy, things have changed after the Manchin-Senema shit show. Now, very prominent Dem leaders are trying to take down our own President. It is almost impossible to not blame our own gutless party.
However, I am doing this because our Party needs to develop spine against a Nazi like MAGA and the Orange Cult FU is cutting me more slack.
One of the tell tale signs of breakdown is when the mainstream media starts to parrot King Trump. I am noticing how Van Jones, Katy Tur have started this. All signs of MS becoming a state propaganda machine. This is likely to result in the growth of DU and Meidastouch like medium. Trump may come after DU if he wins. We will see what happens.

Well organized, mostly intelligent dialogue, informed people, mostly diverse perspectives, active and well trafficked, community standards that disposed of most personal attacks. It was a third or fourth generation shoot off of the old MSNBC message boards that disappeared. My kids used to tease me for being over-engaged in my "Nazi Board".

For the first 5 years I primarily lurked here and posted on UB75. The threads here moved too fast (back then) and it was hard for me to engage in substantive conversation. The posting rate here is much slower now, so I post here instead. Besides, UB75 declined. We did, too, insofar as many wonderful posters dont post here anymore. (25,442 posts)some kind of Democratic leaning political site. It was several months after W was in the WH. It popped up w a few other other suggestions. It looked interesting.
But without a computer at home I didn't follow up.
Nearly 20 years later I was disappointed that a Music Site I heavily frequented with a lively liberal leaning Political Sub-forum wasn't paying enough attention to something; so I went on line to find a liberal leaning dedicated Political Site, in addition to what I already had there.
While I started to do that - suddenly "Democratic Underground" emerged from the recesses of my brain after all these years later! 😄

After Biden was elected, I largely disengaged from politics (except to vote in midterms and local elections, of course). I came back the night of the "debate" because reddit was literally broken and Xitter was a complete cesspool (shocking, I know). (2,867 posts)Media Whores Online - pretty appropriate to today, huh? This was 20 years ago.
This was when they were lionizing Bush/Cheney for letting us get attacked on purpose (weren't expecting 911) so they could effect their Middle East adventurism. The media never went near the topic despite reams of warnings from the Clinton administration and the intelligence community. Big story, not interested.
In case you thought this is new for this generation, nunh-uh. Every generation thinks that. A quarter century ago.
And before the Internet they were savaging the Clintons like you wouldn't believe. Obama was treated with kid gloves by comparison.
Hence Media Whores Online.
American journalism has been behaving like this forever. Almost no amount of right wing treachery moves them, but Gore's sighs, Hillary's emails, Joe's (winning) debate stuttering, well, that's 24/7 for months on end.

(13,719 posts)It was one of two things---either my now husband told me about it (he reads but isn't a member for complicated reasons involving not wanting any online info about political views etc. being known to employers etc.), or I learned about it on Daily Kos, which I have long since quit in disgust. Doesn't matter, I've been here ever since and been increasingly active recently.

(194,406 posts)I was looking for somewhere to discuss news. Free Republic is a bizarro right website thats like following responses in the Classified section of the paper.
They were ripping on a Pitt article. I read it and obviously thought I agreed with much of what he was saying. Somewhere in the murkiness of FR I saw a mention of DU so I looked for it.
Not only is DU a great source from a lot of really knowledgeable people but the set up is vastly different. Ive yet to see any site so easy to navigate and continue discussions.
DU, wise and otherwise but its been a big part of my life for over 20 years. Immeasurable amount learned here (boy did I get torn up and learn from making a side joke about the Coffee Lady) and shared.
I met and marched with Will Pitt against the Iraq War. Several DUers. Took a train up to DC October 26, 2003 (read in Quints voice from Jaws) a week before my marriage. As much as we tried to keep our opinion of news/politics away from our daughter, she figured it out (shes very smart) and basically came to the same basic place. She told me recently that, at one point when she was younger, she thought Democratic Undergound was an actual subversive/radical group of operatives that Dad was involved with.

(2,724 posts)across in 2019, led to my desperation in seeking an alternative chat forum that was organized and civil. So, I did a Google search and stumbled upon DU - it provided a safe place to be able to hear thoughtful viewpoints and to be able to express my thoughts in a respectful environment. DU feels similar to the OFA chat forum, which I still have fond memories of
