in excess of what would have been expected if the pandemic was handled in a responsible way.

I've seen a range of estimates that were all in the hundreds of thousands.

He lead his base to dismiss Covid as a "fraud" and spread suspicion and hatred towards public health officials trying to control the pandemic.

Trump's public pronouncements are still causing Covid deaths.

I fear the day another pandemic arrives that is even more lethal than Covid. Trump has initiated the destruction of our public health systems to handle such a catastrophe.

And then, it was "get back to work, you peons" as the "important" businesses were losing more money than that mis-managed PPP windfall could cover.

I was talking to a fellow rational sane human being this afternoon who was telling me about an elected Republican. He, the Republican, blames a hospital a couple of counties away for the death of his father who died of Covid in 2021. The son believes his father died because the hospital would not treat his father with ivermectin. And the son hasn’t gotten over that. A nearby feed and seed had to take ivermectin off the shelves.

Trump. Ivermectin. Lies. Irresponsibility. Deaths. More lies. Or as a former republican, his name eludes me, succinctly puts it, everything trump touches dies.

Republicans would be blaming Biden, for allowing that first flight in containing covid…
Democrats are crickets, about blaming Convict.
We need to acknowledge convict for everything he mishandled when he was president.

Excess deaths in the US in the first two years of Covid according to the NIH were 1,150,000ish.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9094106/

Some of those would have occurred regardless but if the US had adopted the same policies as New Zealand it could have cut that number to 1/3 (deaths per capita in the US 3,642, deaths per capita in NZ 1,163.)

So if you take the conservative estimate that 350,000 people probably would have died regardless (recognizing that the US isn't an island and is harder to lock down and control immigration to and from), then that leaves you with 800,000 people who died as a direct result of Trump's incompetent policies and messaging.
