FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: In the two days since Biden dropped out, Vote.org saw its highest levels of new voter registrations of the whole cycle: 38,500 people signed up, a 700 percent spike and higher even than when TAYLOR SWIFT made an Instagram post. Most were 34 and under.

(1,381 posts)IMHO, this is the kind of positive news we should focus on. Focus on Harris and her positive message (while also attacking Trump of course).
I'm hoping we don't talk endlessly about what Republicans say. We should be aware of it, but I hope we don't get distracted.

(21,484 posts)But I have the opprtunity to work with a lot of younger professionals, they were looking for someone else to vote for. None like Trump, but they are all a little cynical and Biden was just too old for them.
They showed up in 2020 and are a big reason why Biden won, but millions of them were ready to sit out until now.

(28,456 posts)This is a prime group that could be affected by student loan and abortion policy, not to mention recent attempts at rent control.
I have liked some candidates more than others over the years but it wouldn't occur to me to threaten to withhold my vote till there was a more 'exciting' candidate, especially when the current administration had made progress or was holding the line in those areas that mattered to me.
Why would a group give up all that?

(21,484 posts)"Can't we just get 2 new candidates? I won't vote for either of them."
A lot of younger people just don't pay close attention to policy or politics in general. They don't fully understand the stakes. They are cynical as they look at the country as chaotic and that it's screwed up beyond repair. It kind of became a popular thing to say, "Both guys aren't acceptable to me." When you don't dig deeply and just follow soundbytes, it all seems ridiculous. But the 5 year effort to paint Biden as senile was extremely effective. A lot of young people just take it as a fact that Biden is out of it. Every slip of his tongue became more proof to them. Kamala is just the right choice for a lot of them, at least that's what I am hoping.

(3,710 posts)With the courts blocking parts of the forgiveness plan, they are viewing it as something that Biden promised them and then either took away or failed to deliver. I have young people that feel Biden promised it to get their vote and then took it away.
This is, of course, a ridiculous way to look at what is going on and falling right into a trap laid by the conservatives. And I have been doing my best to explain this - but it is shocking how many young people I have talked to that feel this way.
Here in Florida there are state constitution amendment to provide abortion right protection and legalize recreational marijuana on the ballot this year. I have seen people in that age group pointing out to each other that you can go vote and vote for abortion and marijuana but you don't have to vote for Biden. They aren't saying to vote for Trump - but letting people know you can leave the President choice blank.
So in a weird way, the ballot amendments are giving them a sense of making a choice on policy issues while not voting for President (or other races).

(16,310 posts)don't understand how the student loan forgiveness program works. I worked at a state university and was responsible for the loan forgiveness plan. Even professors and adjuncts had no idea what it was or how to apply for it or that it was enacted into law by George W. Bush.

(28,456 posts)affecting close to 4 million people. Much of it was penalties and interest on long standing debts. How does that not count?
I think there are college aged students mixing this up with free tuition or something.

(11,211 posts)She is so good. The enthusiasm for her just pouring out of crowds. The excitement from younger voters. Everyone, in my Democratic club is going around with a smile.
The pedo Trump humpers are all scowling, angry, trying to compare his ear being shot with Jesus. (Not kidding, I actually heard them saying this yesterday.)
They are saying it's just the honeymoon period. Really, a honeymoon period? When did pedo Trump have a honeymoon period?
He had to ship in and pay people when he did the weird thing down the gold escalator. No one was smiling then except Pedo Trump, his grifters and Russian pals.
When did pedo Trump ever have a honeymoon period? Never, it's not a thing for politicians.
This is no short lived enthusiasm for Kamala. It's a real tangible excitement.

(1,040 posts)I was so angry and sad about the attacks on Biden since the debate. Then I was heartbroken when he decided to step down from running. But the continuing good news that comes in day by day is like balm to the soul and my stress is greatly reduced. Joe Biden did something so selfless and so historic. He will always have a place in my heart.

(11,453 posts)The bump Kamala is getting is huge and positive. There's definitely a change in the wind. And yes, from what I've been reading the MAGA community is very out of sorts.
Delicious!
Better yet we have our convention coming up. Doesn't mean it won't be a rocky, ugly road to maneuver until election day and beyond. But we're definitely at full throttle.
