(37,512 posts)Even repub senators were impressed with him, & said so publicly, after meeting with him shortly after he was appointed Secretary.
I say America is ready for more than they think they are.
Bring on the nerds.

(16,410 posts)If anything, we need more nerds in Congress. Nerds about science, especially, but all kinds really.
If you don't listen to 99% Invisible (speaking of nerds), you should at least hear his interview on the last episode of the Power Broker series. They interviewed him regarding infrastructure. Remember how he was criticized for saying some of the way our infrastructure was designed was racist, but it turns out that's actually true. If you have ever read the Power Broker, Robert Moses deliberately designed his highways and parks to exclude black people.
Buttigieg was talking about ways they are trying to undo some of that.

(30,771 posts)He slept with his best friend, a man, for many years.
It probably doesn't count because 19th century mores are so different from the present day.
Does it?
Anyway, why do we have to even mention this sort of thing? It's just shaming/gaslighting fuel, and none of our business.
I'm so old.

(67,488 posts)People shared beds with same-sex, non-family members all the time back then. One shouldn't read too much into it. Although Lincoln's predecessor, James Buchanan, is believed to have done more than just share a bed with his best friend. It was a popular subject of gossip.

(279 posts)I see LGBTQ2SIA+ history as something to celebrate! The opposite of shaming and gaslighting. Its Pride!
What you said about Lincoln is true. Lincoln also slept with his bodyguard while President, when Mary was away.
More about Lincoln, for those interested:

Arguably our most well-documented gay President was James Buchanan
And VP: William Rufus King, 13th vice president of the United States (relationship with Buchanan)

(11,004 posts)Obama was a nerd. He was a genuine, OG Trekkie. He even flashed Leonard Nimoy a Vulcan salute at a fundraiser in 2007.

(279 posts)Sharp as a whip! And obviously an avid Star Trek fan!! 🖖
Fun fact, there was a Trek trivia fundraiser a few years back, and he did impressively well! Stacey Abrams is prob the biggest fan in our party, but Pete sure gave her a run for her money! It's no surprise that we have so many avid Trek fans in our party. Star Trek has a long history of being one of the most progressive shows on television, depicting a future without hate and perfect equality, where sexism, racism, homophobia, and prejudice of any kind simply don't exist.
I LOVE Pete!!
