Donald Trump Gets No Black Votes vs. Kamala Harris in New Michigan Poll

Published Jul 26, 2024
By Khaleda Rahman

Former President Donald Trump received the support of no Black voters in a new Michigan survey.

The WDIV/Detroit News poll found that the presidential race is a dead heat between Trump, the Republican nominee, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee—with each receiving 41 percent of support.

Among the Black voters surveyed, 82.1 percent supported Harris, 11.5 percent backed independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and none supported Trump.

The poll surveyed 600 likely Michigan voters between July 22 and 24 and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points. It is unclear how many Black people were included in the sample, but it is likely to be fewer than 100 people given that Black residents make up 14 percent of Michigan's population.

I remember Republicans claiming there was fraud in Philadelphia in 2012 because there were some heavily black precincts in North Philly where Romney got no votes. But the news organizations did an investigation, in one case identifying and attempting to interview all 20 registered Republicans in that precinct. Every one they were able to reach said they had either moved away or hadn't voted for Romney.

Harris is actually very slightly but not statistically ahead (like 41.6 - 41.3), but that lead grows 2 points if Whitmer is at the top of the ticket. The dead even status isn’t what encouraged me, it’s the nearly double digit rise from the same firm conducted a poll earlier in the year (January?) when Trump with an 8 point lead.
