'Debbie Downer' James Carville bashed by MSNBC panel for panic over Kamala Harris

Last edited Fri Jul 26, 2024, 02:12 PM - Edit history (1)

I stopped paying attention to Carville a while back.

Reacting to an appearance by veteran Democratic strategist James Carville on MSNBC Thursday night in which he attempted to pour cold water on enthusiasm for Vice President Kamala Harris, the panel on "Morning Joe" hammered him for underestimating what is going on.

With Carville giving a dark warning that Donald Trump and his allies are going to come after Harris hard with an avalanche of attacks, former Hillary Clinton spokesperson Jennifer Palmieri all but rolled her eyes and stated that his point was more than obvious — and he needed to dial down the doom.

"I don't understand why James has to be a Debbie Downer," the exasperated Palmieri complained. "I don't know why we need to step on our enthusiasm, seriously. Democrats are enthusiastic, they're excited to have an answer to the question about who is the best person to take on Donald Trump."

"I don't think anybody is unaware of how nasty the Republicans can get and that it is a difficult race," she continued while speaking to host Jonathan Lemire. "You know, the vice president has seen a big jump in polling, right? That's sort of what is hard, is the last two, three percentage points, right? That's what the whole game is about. "

"We've had really great week, her numbers are improving and I think it's true that the Republicans are caught off guard," she added. "They don't quite know how to attack her or, you know, what her ticket is going to end up being."

It would be more appropriate to voice concerns a bit later. I like James and value his POV, but there will be time for that where his concerns can be better hears...

the Baby Boom generation has given way to Gen X and it's about time ....and btw David Axelrod is another dark cloud guy..he and Carville got what they'd been bitching about for years and when Biden withdrew they were pissed because it didn't unfold exactly the way they imagined it would...chaotic...sucks to be them...as an aside I blame Ari Melber for resurrecting Carville...he's on" life support"...just let him go, Ari

I don't know if his DD bit was earlier on the same show or not (it may have been--I was only half-listening until she came on to discuss Gaza-Israel. But he was as close to complimentary as I've seen him be toward a woman candidate in a long time--albeit with the not-unexpected qualifiers.

He was such an ass toward Biden, I can't really say I'm surprised though.

Something he termed 'exciting.' Excuse me, but what's going on right now is exciting, as in a shift in the wind.

Why in the world would we curb our enthusiasm? We have a VP selection coming up, and then the Democratic Convention to look forward to. and it's driving MAGA World nuts, even nuttier than they are naturally.

The title of Debbie Downer is too kind. Debbie Dumpster is more accurate.

I decided to turn the TV off, we don't need to hear all that, he doesn't know things like he thinks he does, and he's missing the whole point of what she is bringing to the party at a much needed time. I think Biden was the right choice for 2020 and I now think Harris is the right choice for 2024 even though I was initially heartbroken at first to hear Biden decided not to run.

I've always disliked Carville. It seemed he had opposing viewpoints to all our presidential candidates, as if he was the wizard of politics and had all the answers. Also, could not always understand him and he married Mary Matalin, George Bush's reelection campaign manager. She was also part of the GWBush administration, serving both as an assistant to the president and as a counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney. Always wondered how much info he was sharing with her.

Married her in 1993. She worked in the Bush administration until 2002.
