I have narrowed my favorites down to 3. Shapiro, Kelly and Cooper.
Each one has a plus side. Each can add to Haaris' chances of winning a state or region. Shapiro is the mid-west, "blue wall" choice. Cooper puts North Carolina in play, helps in Georgia and shores up Virginia. Kelly is the "sun belt" choice. Probably gives us Arizona and helps in Nevada. Each is qualified in his own right and moderates the ticket.
Harris will need to get the OK from the teachers' unions for Shapiro, as he has been an advocate for school vouchers. But he all but guarantees Pennsylvania. Kelly's experience with gun violence gives him credibility on the subject. Cooper has no office to defend, as he is not on the ballot for re-election.
That's my assessment. What do you think?

(8,754 posts)A BIG no to me for Cooper. The crazy Republican Attorney General will move up to the Governor's position and even though there's a current race, I don't trust Mark Robinson for one minute.
I'm on the fence with Shapiro and Kelly. I wonder if Shapiro being Jewish would be an issue. I adore him and he's a dynamic speaker. Plus, I think he could REALLY help with the Rust Belt states.
I think Kelly may be the safest choice. His seat would be appointed by a Dem. Governor and held until an election in 2026. Also, he's an astronaut and could appeal to swing states as well....

(5,158 posts)Well, Vance would be my actual last choice but hes taken.
No, Kelly is fine, like Tim Kaine was fine when Hillary picked him. But others on her list Id find more inspiring.

(706 posts)What's not to like or be inspired by Mark Kelly's resume? In addition Kelly can help carry battleground state AZ.

(1,699 posts)until his term is up. On the ticket, it's more likely the Dems win Gov of NC.
But I, too, think Kelly is the safest bet. And I, as you say, adore Shapiro. Maybe, if we win, he's a good choice to head the Justice Department as AG.

(31 posts)Pro-union, and an authentic voice of experience for rural communities, DFL, and Midwestern values, age 60. He has a no B.S. direct style of speaking that is somehow very engaging.
But all of the V.P. candidate names that I have heard discussed are really great, very talented people with valuable experience.

(3,816 posts)The VP must do no harm as they say. I'm not sure Shapiro wouldn't cost Kamala some of the youth vote.
Everybody else is an ELECTED Democrat. We need to keep all of the seats that we have and expand on that. Pete is one of the most articulate of all the possible choices. Then there is the opportunity to totally explode the Magats mind, Kamala with a Jewish husband and a gay V.P.

I was no fan of Pete Buttigieg during the primaries on DU.
When Buttigieg became Secretary of Transportation. He listened to those concerns i.e., the interactions with his black constituents. In some of the first interviews. Buttigieg was talking a lot about how racism was designed into cities and roads. The right immediately went after him twisting his words into "racist road" etc. They were going to attack him because he's gay, so it wasn't a surprise. They like to combine their bigotries. He also knows how to fight politely and without getting angry. I feel he was put in the cabinet to be a VP and eventual President. When the far left started to criticize him I knew he must be doing something right. That he has a cabinet position. He's developed a working relationship with Harris making him a perfect fix.
The best teams have a good working relationship like Obama and Biden. For example, I loved Clinton and Gore but I never felt they were always on the same page.
I'd also love Mark Kelly as the Blerd in me thinks an astronaut would be cool, of course, he was in the Navy and again feel he has a good work relationship with Harris. Someone that literally has been a part of science experiments would be a great voice for Nasa and STEM in the White House.

(309 posts)Unlike you I liked Pete in the primary but eventually realised Biden was who we needed at the time.

(706 posts)The V.P. pick will most likely be from a battleground state. It makes much more sense with such a short campaign window.
