Yesterday. Police came first and immediately called for ambulance. Seems my blood sugar was 42. I'm back home now. They got me to 99.a new diet. Which is gonna be rough as I had gastric bypass 13 years ago. My stomach doesn't handle sugars well.
But thank you, whoever called, I was on the wrong side of the moon, for sure.

(2,486 posts)That I should share. I'm kinda a loner, but make sure, someone at least knows where you are, in case of emergency.
I got real scared when the police walked in and grabbed me, thought they were gonna cuff me. Then I heard the 2nd officer on his radio, we need an ambulance, now.
Dr told me, my chemistry tests were a mess, they gave me potassium, magnesium, glucose, sodium, they just kept hanging bag after bag.
I worked hematology in the service, worst part was, I understood the results, I just don't know how they got that bad. I'm supposed to eat protein first due to bypass,
Now, seems I need to rework everything, to keep my sugar up.

(2,486 posts)Im an old timer, I lost 250 11 years ago. Been constant since then , i weigh 200 +or minus 5 sincw then , my surgeon retired.
Damn the rules all changed I'm supposed to wat proteins first, now I have low sugar
Yeah I'm confused

(16,278 posts)The low sugar without meds is unusual. Were you not eating much in grief? It can happen from malnutrition. It's also possible you had a dumping syndrome reaction to some sugar that you did eat too much of.

(17,123 posts)Your VA doctor should refer you out to one under community care.
** I'm a VA nurse.
My hubs is a veteran and he is going to an outside for his teeth because the VA is BUSY. He also had to go to the hospital couple years ago when got sick and they took care of that too. Granted on the last one I finally convinced him to go to MedEx and they called the rescue squad for him while I was sitting in the lot waiting for him. They wanted him on an IV immediately.
So yes, the VA helps where they can at times.

(35,131 posts)You mentioned you were drinking. Your liver can only do one thing at a time, so it can't participate in pumping the background level of sugar you need in your blood for your body to survive, as long as it is trying to get rid of the alcohol.

(68,112 posts)...went on a new psych drug. Within days, she was feeling awful. Finally got bad enough, we went to hospital.
Blood test showed VERY low sodium in her blood. (Hyponatremia)
They pumped in saline, but the number only crept up, while urine sodium was high. She simply wasn't absorbing sodium (& potassium, but to a far less severe degree.(
She was only 10ppm above the LD50!
Her GP & pysch were perplexed.
I go on-line to look up this new drug. The 3rd serious side-effect listed was "substantial loss of sodium & other electrolytes".
I ran back to the hospital & demanded they quit giving her the new med, and go back to what they replaced. I told them she'd refuse any meds & I'd bring her stuff from home unless they got the order changed with an hour.
Next morning, after 14 hours without that drug, her blood sodium went up 25 points, which was still low, but not dangerous. By 2pm that day, she was back to normal.
It's amazing how bad it can be when these important factors go out of balance. If we had waited until the next day, she may have died!
Hopefully your diet changes will get this into balance.

(12,978 posts)a bit of personal information in case of such emergencies. I am usually with family and friends, but two months out of the year I live alone and dont necessarily communicate with them daily. But Im always on DU and possibly someone would take note if my big mouth didnt chime in for a few days. Its a thought. Glad you had someone to make that call!

(1,812 posts)For your own protection do this: Go to Amazon, search for glucose packets and buy 2 or 3 dozen of the little fruit flavored 15mg packets of glucagon - its basically a fruit flavored sugary glop. Tear off the end of the packet, stick the open end in your mouth, and squeeze. It provides a measured amount of glucose that almost immediately enters the bloodstream and gets your blood glucose up.
My wife is insulin dependent diabetic. We keep two dozen in a candy dish at home; she carries a dozen in her purse; theres a dozen in a plastic bag in each of our cars.
Im an EMT and this is what we carry on the ambulance.
A BG reading of 42 is life threatening and is very dangerous. Im surprised you were still conscious.
Please for your own safety get a supply of glucose packets.

(88,632 posts)...and not just the drink.
I've only seen it once, and it was like night and day for the guy. One moment sharp and in charge, the next standing there lost as he could be.
You got to keep up with all that, testing, nibbling.
Wow, oh, wow!
Really something knowing this internet community cares enough to reach out and try and keep you safe. So many good folks here. Even if most of what we see in our minds about each other are just figments of our imaginations, we're still real enough to care and act on those on each others behalf, and that's a beautiful thing.
Thanks for keeping in touch and making my day!

(42,587 posts)A blood sugar crash like that seriously debilitates your ability to do anything at all (I know Im preaching to the choir) and you were right in guessing people would read your post.
SO glad to see youre better. I hope the new diet helps keep you more even. I assume you have insulin. Good old Ozempic helps too if you can get it. My hubs is diabetic so I sympathize with that dance you have to do. Glad youre better.
