Some of the smartest liberals and moderates I've ever met, were southerners. Stuart Stevens reminds me of them a lot.

Authoritarians are rigid in their conformity to their own social norms. They absolutely do not consider themselves weird. And, as someone with Asperger's, let me assure you that authoritarians are considered far more normal by the 2/3'rds of the population who are not authoritarian that many people with Asperger's are. As long as the authoritarians refrain from "saying the quiet part out loud" they generally fit right in in society. They frequently move right up the ladder into high corporate, military, and government positions, whereas people who genuinely come across as "weird" struggle to maintain employment.

Sensible people don't elect the weird and creepy and controlling. Democrats will improve education and health care to get them the help they need.
