Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe great meltdown that GOP strategists warned about for years is here
As Kamala's updraft surges higher -- while Trump's convention bounce and sympathy bounce peaked behind him -- it's looking increasingly like we may be looking at a massive blue wave...
And a catastrophic collapse and wipeout for the GOP, from Trump all the way down ticket.
This is the Great Demolition that a generation of GOP strategists warned about... the warning that Republicans ignored, as strategists called for the GOP to become more welcoming and diverse and instead the far-right base went full MAGA.
If this thing goes as far as it appears it might, MAGA is over and the GOP will be up for grabs.

(4,110 posts)This is where the party was always heading. Theyve been going for this for sixty years and more and they are not about to let the dream die. None of this goes away even if, and its still a big if, we beat them back again this November. They still have the courts, they still have the statehouses, theyre always going to challenge for congressional majorities, theyre entrenched everywhere in the government.
They refuse to die and they always come back worse. Nixon was supposed to be the end, what happened? We had one term after that followed by three massive landslide victories by people worse than he. W was supposed to be the end. What happened? Obama won, we had big majorities in both Houses and they came back worse only two years later and killed us. Now this asshole is here, is literally the worst President ever and openly tried to overthrow the motherfucking government and hes still got a chance to finish the job. Hes right there and the election can go either way.
My point is that these people are never going away and every single subsequent election is going to be the most important election of our lifetime. Because all its gonna take is one slip, one snake slipping through the fence and they will finish the job. It was amateur hour last time, next time it wont be.
If we win this election and get majorities in both houses, we absolutely must pass safeguards to prevent this sort of thing from ever happening again. We didnt do it this time. We have to do it next time because eventually theyre going to win and theyre going install the system they want. Theyre never going to reset, theyre never going to regain their sanity.
The Wolf is always at the door.
We have to win.

the MAGA cretins are not going away in one election cycle so we need to render them irrelevant by retaking the House with a solid majority, increase our Senate presence, and begin to erase McConnell's toxic legacy...
the magnitude of Joe Biden passing the torch to the next generation cannot be overstated...no more "when they go low we go high"...when they go low we kick them in the nuts..we get them on the ground and step on their necks...from now on "nice" is just another four letter word...

(25,040 posts)We will need to stay strong, united, and determined afterward to defeat all their efforts to overturn the election and take charge. Many of the courts, especially the SC, will side with them.
There will be chaos during their attempt to take over. When the SC rules in their favor, our leaders will be faced with some deep soul searching decisions on whether to abide by such an insurrectionist ruling or go against everything they have always believed about obeying the rule of law. Perhaps they will be clever enough to legally get around such rulings without openly defying the law.
The fact is that the election will not be the end of the struggle to defend ourselves from a dictatorship. It will be the first step. Hang in there, though. We can win in the end.

(12,628 posts)I've heard this similar statement about the gop on its' last legs, in past elections.
One in particular, claimed the Democratic party would be in control for 30 years or more.
Obviously, it didn't happen.

With hacking of both parties servers. Dems said it was Russia, GOP said nothing, but TFG began his escalator descent taking GOP with him.
GOP began defending, supporting, adoring all he had to say
WHAT?
Was on GOP server?
Kompromat material?
So many fell in line its spooky

(1,254 posts)That will shake things up for an election or two, once the mega donors shift to the "sane" Republican side, where's the money for MAGA? With some good Dem leadership, removal of Citizen's United, a reformed Supreme Court, we can set things up to be better for future generations.
And we'll have to always be vigilant. Nor more "we're better than the other guy", unless it's true. No more "vote blue, no matter who". The Dem has to actually be better, not just barely better than the alternative, to work for us and not Wall Street. It's going to be hard. No doubt about it. Backbreaking, heartbreaking, soulbreaking WORK.
I believe this is the pivot point for democracy. If we lose, we're done. Not forever, maybe fifty years, a hundred years. Untold suffering to come and endure. So, the only option is to win, and to keep winning. I think Joe Biden's greatest gift to us was knowing he had to step down, and having the courage to do it. To trust Kamala Harris, to trust us.
We have to make sure he didn't make this sacrifice for nothing. It's on us. The torch has been passed, now we have to fucking light up the world with it.
