That was the key that allowed Biden to get more done than people thought possible.
Relationships!! One of the most important things we have lost over the years. Congress doesnt have a Tip ONeill equivalent that can battle with you during the day and have a beer with you after hours. Walz brings that back to the table.

(177 posts)No offense to Shapiro who by all accounts has been a great Governor. I think Walz has a lot of appeal to everyday voters plus he has the most governing experience (congress and governorship).
Of course, I will support Kamala no matter who she picks. We Democrats have quite a talented field of VP prospects and they all have their individual pluses for the campaign....
Think. Again.

(12,003 posts)My main concerns about Shapiro are the potential for him to bring more attention to divisions in the party regarding Israel (which are not fair, since the other candidates have similar positions, but it's the reality), and the fact that he clearly had his sights set on 2028 before Biden stepped aside. Which has me a little nervous about whether he'd really want Kamala to win. But if that's the case, it might be better to keep him close by putting him on the ticket, since if he is picked and we don't win Pennsylvania that will hurt his future aspirations. Also, Obama and Biden both seem to trust him so that makes me trust him more.
OTOH, Walz seems like a potentially better governing partner, more akin to Kamala's own Joe Biden. But she doesn't get to govern unless she wins.

(1,213 posts)He's responsible for pimping Sarah Palin to the McCain campaign. Everyone ignorant of reality likes to blame Schmidt for it, but Kristol did far more to push her onto the ticket than Schmidt ever did.

(5,383 posts)No one was hurt. He has never scrubbed it from his history and is no issue at this point. The judge threw out charges and chastised the officer for not realizing Walz was deaf in one ear.
Unless you go to right wing Trump sites like Alpha News you can find the actual information in a number of places.
I think most people forgive him for that mistake while they celebrate his more than 30 years of service to working people, families, children.

(5,383 posts)Im not even sure its allowed on DU but I dont believe in alerting.
Alpha News The launch of Alpha News was first promoted today by the Minnesota Tea Party Alliance on Facebook. Many of the initial news stories from Alpha News cover issues which have been advocated by the Minnesota Tea Party Alliance.
Alpha News
While Watchdog.org and The UpTake get money from partisan donors, the money trail behind five-month-old Alpha News is much more difficult to track.
Its website says nothing about its donors or editorial process, but does carry ads and asks readers to donate. One thing is certain: Alpha News has ties to a prominent Republican donor and the political group he founded years ago.
Business filings show that Alex Kharam incorporated Alpha News. Kharam also works as executive director for the Minnesota Freedom Club, a political group that supports conservative candidates and was founded by and largely bankrolled by Republican donor Robert Cummins.
If you want to read about the actual DUI and the subsequent dismissal of charges you can find it I think locally but you may have to sign up to the newspapers site. It wasnt really a big deal during the governors race when so there isnt much online other than the right wing media which tried to use it during the Gov race.
But anyway even if you cant relate - the fact is the charges were dropped and Walz stopped drinking. I think the Democratic ticket could survive that.

(877 posts)Part of picking a VP is finding someone you're comfortable working side by side with for 4 years. Harris is close friends with Shapiro and were both Attorney Generals.
Guessing she'll pick the person she can easily form a partnership with and trusts.
While factoring in the political pros and cons.
I'd be shocked if she doesn't pick Shapiro. They'd definitely make for an attractive ticket with great energy. And Shapiro is outstanding on the campaign trail.

(5,383 posts)This was fun to read.
Despite his appreciation for Shapiro, however, the senior adviser suggested that he likes Walz even better.
Hes just a blast, the adviser said.
He pointed to a January infrastructure event in Wisconsin, where Walz and Biden mingled with voters over beers.
Biden was in the best mood ever, the adviser suggested and recalled others joking that the Minnesota governor should be brought around more often because he always put him in such a great mood.

(1,213 posts)His CV pales next to that of Walz. Governor less than 2 years compared to six for Walz, for instance.
The most concerning is that he has no federal legislative experience, when a major component of a VP is advocating for the POTUS agenda in Congress. Every single Democratic VP since Truman has served in elected office on Capitol Hill for a reason, you know. Walz is in that tradition, which means he understands the process, without needing a learning curve to become effective.
Shapiro has no experience of how the Hill works. He's a bright guy who can learn, and he undoubtedly knows people there....but being smart in general isn't being smart about dealing with Congress. Knowing people there as an outsider is far different from actually being among them as a member. We need someone who can hit the ground running in establishing the Harris agenda, not someone who's learning to get a feel for the place.

(7,964 posts)He would balance out the ticket because he's seen as a moderate while Waltz is seen more as liberal. Shapiro is philly, he's a fighter and exceptional politically. He will get us over the finish line in Pennsylvania and the election. She also has chemistry with Shapiro, you can see the affection they have for one another from their long time friendship. He also endorsed her for president when she ran in 2020, I believe one of the first Dems to come out for her
liberalmediaaddict
(877 posts)Shapiro is definitely formidable and has been a great ally to Harris.
Sounds like she's under a lot of pressure from progressive Democrats to pick Walz. If she's more comfortable working side by side with Shapiro she should definitely choose him.
Zoomie1986
(1,213 posts)Bill Kristol, Joe Scarborough, Chris Christie are all pushing for him.
I'll give you some advice, though: Whoever Bill Kristol wants, run. Run hard and fast and as far away as you can get.
He's the party most responsible for getting Sarah Palin on the McCain ticket, contrary to the mistaken conventional wisdom that Schmidt decided it. He only came round to Palin after Kristol had pimped her hard for several months.
His judgement has always been bad.

(425 posts)but Shapiro on the ticket would become a distraction with entire focus on his real or perceived stance on Israel/ Gaza. The Repugs can twist that and can create divisions among the Dems. While some may think that it is the issues that will matter, remember that a few short weeks ago those same issues didnt matter enough for Biden to have a lead in the polls.
