(40,147 posts)Disclaimer: I haven't read the entire article yet. But something jumped out at me in the first couple of paragraphs.
Chump's speech on January 6, 2021 wasn't given at the Washington Monument or the National Mall, he spoke on the grounds in front of the White House. Only relatively small numbers were allowed into the grounds because they had to pass through the metal detectors.
When Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Monument, there were no metal detectors, no barriers to keep people away. They all kept coming and coming and coming. The official number in attendance was 250,000 ... well OK, that's a good guess. But there's no way to know the real number.
On Jan. 6th all the crazy MAGAs who were not allowed into the White House grounds, turned around and started walking to the US Capitol. That's where the real trouble happened, and it was planned to happen there all along. Crazy MAGAs who were carrying weapons (barred from the White House grounds) walked right on the Capitol grounds with whatever they were carrying. Those tiny barriers that the Capitol Police had were really nothing more than bike racks. MAGAs jumped over those things in no time.
The estimates for the attempted coup at the US Capitol on 1/6/21 are something like 53,000 people, but it's a guess. The ones who broke in and entered the building have been counted, and most are now identified. But many more stood outside on the grass and I don't know if we have an accurate number for them. It's easily 5 TIMES SMALLER than the peaceful crowd who came to hear and support Dr. King.
The 53,000 estimate is for the US Capitol, not the White House. Again, a much smaller number heard him speak at the White House. New York Times, this is a terrible miss on fact checking.
