And did you get close enough to meet the candidate?
Mine:
Bill Clinton (Wilmington, DE). He hung around a LONG time to greet people who wanted to meet him, so I shook his hand.
Barack Obama (Philadelphia, PA). Couldn't get close, could barely see over people. But great speech.
Hillary Clinton (Philadelphia, PA). Along with Obama, Bill, Springsteen, others. I was very fired up and remember feeling pity for the few Trumpers trying to protest outside---assuming that they'd get destroyed. Couldn't get close.
John Kerry (Wilmington, DE). At IBEW Union Hall. Couldn't get close.
Bernie Sanders (Philadelphia, PA). Couldn't get close, packed Temple University site.
I never made it to a Joe Biden presidential rally, but attended many public events that he was at when he was running for Senate ("Beef-and-Beers," etc.). I'm sure I must have shook hands with him at some point, but can't remember.
I did shake Al Gore's hand at a book-signing in Philly and said "Thank you, Mr. President" to which he politely smiled.
The liveliest of them was the Hillary rally in Philly b/c it was such and All-Star event (with Obama, Springsteen, etc.). And the Bernie crowd was great. John Kerry's event was very subdued. Obama's in Philly was cool b/c The Roots opened up for him.

(69,353 posts)wallace came to a high school gym rally in Riverside CA. it was almost a riot, protestors outside, police helicopters circling overhead. we got in and half the crowd was booing. his speech was crap but his demeanor was quite folksy. one could see the attraction to him as a rabble rouser. as an event it quite entertaining.
saw clinton at the pacific amphitheater in So Cal. the organizers made everyone dump the food and drinks they brought. that was a bad vibe cuz it was a 4 hour event. His speech was good tho
sat next to Dean at a breakfast rally at a local restaurant. it was in his early days lol. very charming and cute as a button

(27,004 posts)I'd met Governor Granholm several times, before. She actually pushed me to introduce myself to John Kerry.
Also met Max Cleland at a veteran's event for John Kerry. Met Al Gore at a John Kerry rally.
I got a kiss on the cheek from Al Gore and a hug from both John Kerry and Max Cleland.
I met Elizabeth Edwards at a Kerry rally. She was absolutely lovely.
I've met Debbie Stabenow several times and got to introduce my niece to her. That was nice.
Also met Rep. Dale Kildee at both Kerry and Obama rallies. He was a good friend of my uncle so I always got a big smile from him when he spotted me. Also met his nephew, Dan Kildee.
Met Rep. John Conyers at a rally for John Kerry. We had quite a long chat.

(62,930 posts)so we have met most Dems running and even some repute such as Mitt Romney, John McCain and newt Gingrich. that last one was a hoot.
Perhaps one of my favorites was Steve Bullock of Montana - really down to earth.
My single favorite memory was getting a half hour with Michelle Obama by accident. She is every bit as nice and down to earth as she is portrayed.
Got Obama to personally autograph one of his books for me.
And yes, we met Biden.
Friend of ours had a bed and breakfast where many politicians stopped when they were in the area. Hillary always made it a point to stay there.
I have lots and lots of memories - Howard Dean, John Edwards, Obama etc.

(4,551 posts)I had two tickets from the state party and took a coworker. It was downtown and outside of the marketplace. Good crowd. Cold night We were probably thirty yards from the stage. He acknowledged my grade school by name and the kids from there that they had bussed in and put on bleachers for the occasion.
Ah, the heady days when Ohio always voted for the winner.

(2,304 posts)It was in a park in Wilmington. He was not in a rush---and I remember he was very folksy.
I had a temporary job as a security guard at the New Castle County Airport and I also saw Ross Perot come in through there once.

(19,244 posts)And two for Bill Clinton in 1992. The second one I tried to get an autograph, but SS crumpled the paper in my hand before I could approach him.
Couldn't get close enough for a handshake or anything, anyway.

(460 posts)IIRC, it was the first time he could announce he had enough candidates. The line to get in stretched around the block and down another block. We didn't get to meet him, but it was a hell of a night.
I knew it would be a wait, so I started a sock in queue. I'd brought bamboo needles so I could get them past security. I still have the socks and call them my Obama socks. I picked a yarn out of my stash at random and was equally embarrassed and amused to find later that the colorway was named "Brown Sugar". Oh, well.
And in college, though I didn't go to the speech, Hubert Humphrey came through the Student Union and grabbed my hand to shake it as he came through.

(3,868 posts)My first ever political rally, I went to see John Kerry at Ohio State just shortly after Howard Dean dropped out of the race (I was a big Howard Dean guy, and in a lot of ways, still am). I bought his book before going to the rally, and I made my way to the railing after the rally, He signed my book for me and even answered a couple of my questions while he was doing it. I saw him again later in the year with John Edwards in Zanesville, Ohio, but the crowd was a lot bigger, and I couldn't get anywhere near them. Ben Affleck was also there, and I met Terry Anderson while standing in line. He was running for some office or other at the time.
Speaking of Howard Dean, he came to my local Border's (when it still existed) to sign copies of his new book just before the 2004 election. He signed my book and told me, "That's a great shirt," (I was wearing my Kerry-Edwards shirt). I told him, "It should have been you," and he thanked me.
In 2008, I went to the huge rally for Obama on the Statehouse lawn in Columbus the Sunday before the election. Biggest crowd I've ever seen. When I came home, I told my wife that I bet there were 100,000 people there. The crowd estimates were smaller than that, but I swear it looked just as big as an Ohio State game at the 'Shoe, and that holds over 100,000.
In 2012, I went to see Obama again at the Franklin County Fairgrounds, which is literally 5 minutes from my house. Smaller crowd, but still great energy.
In 2016, I went to see Bernie Sanders at the Schottenstein Center on Ohio State's campus. That was the last political rally I've been to.
I would LOVE to break my dry streak and go see Kamala Harris if she ever makes a stop here in Ohio, but she was all over this area earlier this week and conspicuously skipped over Ohio. I hope she's not writing Ohio off. The old Howard Dean "50 State Strategy" works, and it will work again this year too if the Democrats have the wherewithal to run it.

(2,304 posts)To think of going to see Kamala when she introduced Tim in Philly. By the time I asked a couple friends, there was like a 10-mile long line at Temple. So I just watched on TV. But that's about 35 minutes from my house. Bummed. But I bet they'll be around again!
