I kinda think that debate was just the nail in the coffin. But yeah, it turns out that replacing him with Harris was a stroke of genius.

He needed to wait until the RNC Officially Nominated TSF and set him in stone as the candidate; if Biden had left before that point it would have been possible (if not likely given the ego involved) to push TSF out with minimal difficulty, as we witnessed with Biden's passing the torch.

The debatebacle was unplanned/unexpected; it spooked the donor class and they unknowingly jumped the gun — I genuinely don't think they had much, if any, influence on the decision.

Makes sense he would project that onto others, and then get confused about first name/last name. His handlers must be tearing their hair out trying to remind him things constantly. Then, he figures if he didn't know (or remember) something it must be big news he can share with others. It's the whole Frederick Douglas thing all over.
