My experience of a grandfather was rather different. It seemed to be about bringing home candy bars for us kids but then eating dinner without ever looking up from his plate because kids were being heard as well as seen from the sugar high...

My Irish/German Catholic Grandparents did that - babysitting when my parents needed to get away from us.

My brother is retired and has 3 grandchildren. My SIL still works. My brother does it all for his grandchildren to help his daughter and son-in-law who both work. He chauffeurs, feeds the kids, meets with teacher at end of the day, takes them to ball practice and much more. He loves doing it and does as good as any post-menopausal woman. So leave us postmenopausal women alone. Let the men carry the load for awhile. If my brother didn't have grandchildren, he would spend his afternoons and early evening watching TV. It's much more healthy mentally and physically spending time taking care of the young ones. Also he is giving them memories they will never forget. Kudos to my brother for stepping up. Alot of men would have said no.
