Is this an early "October Surprise"?

The endorsement by Dick Cheney of VP Kamala Harris?

How many Republicans will continue to support Donald Trump after Cheney's endorsement?

I think we can safely assume that almost all of the MAGA cult will continue their support. If there are any desertions from convicted felon, it would likely be former Bush/Cheney supporters that have followed the lemmings. Cheney may give them the excuse to break away from the cult?

Or is it truly an earth-shaking political event? Is there something going on that is bigger than either political Party? Will enough people choose country over Party to make the difference in November?

Whether or not it will make the difference in the race, it is a shocking and surprising announcement, nonetheless.

At least Cheney is considered, "hard right". I think. Well at least I considered him to be. But it could just be that he was always focused on one thing. The rest of it was likely "sneer right". I really didn't know his opinion on anything except foreign policy. Don't know what he thought about anything domestic or if he even had an opinion. He probably could care less. Hell he would have probably supported Medicare for All if it supported the war in Iraq....

Think. Again.

....not only do rightwing voters now have the face-saving permission they needed to not vote for trump, old school republicans in all types of official capacities, election officers, law enforcement people, journalists, court officials, etc, etc, now also have the de-facto party's permission to not assist trump anymore.

In fact, they've been given the dog whistle to start working AGAINST trump, and will gladly do that after trump's statement this evening trashing cheney, who they still see as a former prince of the exalted republican throne.

Don’t like the guy’s politics or record, but I welcome him in support of Kamala Harris for President of the United States and for his loyalty to the Constitution. We are not just gathering supporters, we are establishing connections between all groups who believe in democracy and the law. It’s gonna be a blue wave like no one’s ever seen.

He is a father supporting his daughter. Pretty common really. His daughter, Liz, is strongly anti-Trump for many reasons, mostly personal. Her father Dick is no longer a force in the R party and probably close to death. It would be surprising and shocking if he said anything else.

On the one hand, Dick Cheney is a true old-school Republican, main street, big business, military-industrial complex kind of a Republican. I suspect that there are some other similar Republicans, older Republicans, who are embarrassed by Trump but didn't know that they had a choice. Cheney could lead some of them towards the light...

But...

On the other hand, this was a late Friday afternoon/evening announcement. Anyone who follows politics (and media-related techniques and manipulation) know that you announce something on Friday that you want to hide, things that are shameful or wrong. If Dick Cheney wanted this to be truly influential, he should have announced this on Monday morning, so that the chattering classes would have the whole week to talk about him. This announcement will die over the weekend.
