The mainstream press is failing America - and people are understandably upset

By Rebecca Solnit

The media is still pursuing the appearance of fairness by treating true and false, normal and outrageous, as equally valid

The first thing to say about the hate and scorn currently directed at the mainstream US media is that they worked hard to earn it. They’ve done so by failing, repeatedly, determinedly, spectacularly to do their job, which is to maintain their independence, inform the electorate, and speak truth to power. While the left has long had reasons to dismiss centrist media, and the right has loathed it most when it did do its job well, the moderates who are furious at it now seem to be something new – and a host of former editors, media experts and independent journalists have been going after them hard this summer.

Longtime journalist James Fallows declares that three institutions – the Republican party, the supreme court, and the mainstream political press – “have catastrophically failed to ‘meet the moment’ under pressure of [the] Trump era”. Centrist political reformer and columnist Norm Ornstein states that these news institutions “have had no reflection, no willingness to think through how irresponsible and reckless so much of our mainstream press and so many of our journalists have been and continue to be”.

Most voters, he says, “have no clue what a second Trump term would actually be like. Instead, we get the same insipid focus on the horse race and the polls, while normalizing abnormal behavior and treating this like a typical presidential election, not one that is an existential threat to democracy.”

It's twilight, and it's about to get dark, if today's media is a measurement of this statement.

Sane washes tfg. They do seem to play a little longer clips of VP Harris. But they make a vague reference to something that sounds like tfg is sane or has policies.

Has opened our eyes. We thought some republicans were patriots and gave a damn about this country. The Supreme Court put in place by the republicans don’t believe in the constitution only how many bribes and how much to sell out for as they strip away our freedoms. The moral majority ain’t moral they just want to legislate our morals while they act like animals in rut. The ones who are supposed to be the public’s eyes and ears , to practice investigative journalism and to seek the truth and report same are on the rich man’s dole also. At least we know the truth and realize who our enemies are. The first part of the fight is to elect real democratic leaders like Madam Vice President and fight like hell against the republicans.

we have a blue tsunami, but if the media has its own 'come to Jesus' moment, then this may be a great thing.

And, if the Dems win and put some good policy in place, fix the Supreme Court, and do the other things they have promised, we may have saved our republic for the next fifty years.

Want to save it for another 100? Medicare for all Americans and raise taxes on the billionaires and corporations to pay for it. Then the Dems will never lose another election for at least a couple decades.
