But today (Liz) Cheney also endorsed Rep. Colin Allred (D) for U.S. Senate in his challenge to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).

That’s a little surprising considering that defeating Cruz would really help Democrats to maintain control of the Senate.

Cheney knows a Republican-controlled Senate would be a check on a Kamala Harris presidency. That possibility — or even likelihood — could make other anti-Trump Republicans more comfortable about voting for Harris.

But Cruz was also a Senate ally of Trump’s in attempting to overturn the election. Cheney sees him as complicit and also a threat to our democracy.

6. Then why risk the blowback? And as the OP says...

...some Rs would be more comfortable voting against TFG if they felt a R congress could be a check on Harris. Those Rs may be less receptive to "Republicans for Harris" if they're advocating conceding congress as well. So she's also risking weakening some of her reachout by expanding it to include Cruz. That makes me think it wouldn't be worth her doing unless she really felt there was a chance of his losing, which I think strategically is the only way she potentially gains more than she loses by coming out against him.

...in its current corrupt form won't get over the Trump sickness unless it faces serious, painful across-the-board defeat.

While my idea of a "healthy" Republican (or a totally new opposition) party is certainly a bit different from Cheney's, I do know we need a viable second party for long-term political health. Any single-party system gets lazy and/or corrupt over time.

“The problem with Ted isn’t that he’s humorless. It isn’t even his truly reprehensible far-right politics. No, the problem with Ted—and the reason so many senators have a problem with Ted—is simply that he is an absolutely toxic coworker. He’s the guy in your office who snitches to corporate about your March Madness pool and microwaves fish in the office kitchen. He is the Dwight Schrute of the Senate. In”

5. I think she's all for clearing out the Felon crazies from the party thereby making herself more relevant in it

There's always a substantial level of self service in a political Cheney IMO. I do think she cares about democracy and the Constitution, at least her very very conservative interpretation of it. Even more I believe she cares about the GOP being the long held home of conservatives in general and would like that house cleaned up. First, it would be a good thing for her as she would come out as a leader in a reformed GOP setting her up nicely for a run at a Senate seat or higher. Second, that would be, for better or worse, good for the country because no matter how much we disagree with even regular far right conservatives such as herself, we desperately need a sane, sensible and debatable opposition party. Now on the chance this happens could she and others put guardrails up within the party to prevent another Felon? That would remain to be seen.

I might add, and I've stated it on this board before, this Cheney love fest that's cropped up makes me cringe and I hope liberal progressive's on this board and in general will quickly fall out of love with her, her dad and Kinzinger for that matter, after 11/5 and tell them they are overstaying their welcome

Lately ‘R”s, they don’t seem the same

Some those repuQs, they don’t say my name

Acting funny, but I do know why

They found out I’m a crazy guy

Purple wave all around

Damn the polls, they’re all diving down

Who, you ask, brings me such misery?

Dick Cheney’s girl, that’s who, she put a spell on me

Arrrggghhh! Help me! Help meee!, etc.

That’s all I got.
