Think. Again.

Are we seeing something new happening?

With the anouncements from the cheneys, and the "republicans for Harris" movement, all the individual republicans who spoke at the DNC, etc, it seems like this election isn't going to be red vs. Blue this time.

This election, it's going to be "Americans Against Maga".

A Purple Wave.

Democrats were always trying to shift just a little right to maintain enough power to govern. We met the culture war with compromise.

Rethugs are moving toward us but it is only because their power grab moved so far right as to become fascist leaving the whole ship of State at risk of sinking.

I dont know how much we should embrace the fleeing right wing patriots. We may find the Harris agenda diluted by it, or only evident in policy initiatives such as small business tax breaks. Biden did consequential things and I think they will endure. But if we think we are headed to a progressive era, Big Business reality will intrude like it always does.

Yes - it's his daughter who has been continuously attacked. However, I listened to Liz Cheney's book and her father gave her the same guidance in the lead up to January 6th that my dad gave to me the day before he died: Daughter defend your country.

Two men, two different ends of the political spectrum, but both were Cold Warriors.

We are in serious danger for Dick Cheney to make such an announcement. Very serious danger.

Vote like our lives depend on it.

Putin cannot be allowed to succeed. China needs to be checked, especially with respect to Taiwan. A China-Russian-Saudia Arabia alliance is a global threat.

Trump will let these countries do whatever they want. He's essentially a Russian agent. And SA has already paid him off. And who knows what back room deals he has with China.

I suspect that at some point W will also endorse VP Harris.

I'm old enough to remember how evil Dick Cheney is, and how extremist Liz Cheney is.
Liz Cheney revealed a completely different aspect to her character and intellect when conducting and presenting the J6 hearings.

But then a while later when the Dobbs decision was laid down, she tweeted praise to Alito for that decision. So, it's a very mixed bag for me. She's intellectually quite competent, astute and presents her self exceedingly well, and yet this other aspect of her ideology raises a very creepy side to her which has devastating negative impact on Women's lives and families writ large

I always felt like she's been setting the table for Presidential campaign running as an Independent, appealing to traditional conservative Republicans and conservative Democrats as well as independents (which have been growing for the past few cycles)Before Haley tossed her hat in the race, I was speculating LC might have attempted a run.
She still might be for 2028.

I feel but one concern. Will Democrats snatch defeat from the jaws of victory? Not on the electoral contest, that's a done deal. Fate speaking with authority. A narrow margin in the house and senate will bring out the loonies like basement rats in a tenement fire.

Beware of distraction. There are many aligning with powerful interests jockeying for positions to undermine the real changes America must make. There will be voices of "sanity" preaching "caution" and professing the wisdom of "slow and steady". These are distractions, smoke screens and mirror parades fighting to maintain their threatened control over our Democracy.

Democracy is not a synonym for capitalism just as capitalism is not a form of government. Inherited wealth is the heart and soul of capitalism and always has been.

Sat Sep 7, 2024, 09:37 AM

we aren't.communists. But this is a relabeling of liberals that RWers have been working toward for several decades. Trump is now fairly consistently referring to Harris as Comrade Kamala Harris on both Truth Social and Twitter, Musk is pushing that image as hard as he can on Twitter (including with lots of stupid AI art), and you have books like Jack Posibiec's Unhumans - https://www.democraticunderground.com/100219269771 - not only identifying anyone who wants social justice and equality as communist and unhuman, but trying to justify RW dictators' murder of their political opponents.

It isn't merely a cult of personality allowing Trump to do much better in polls than he should do. It's very deliberate brainwashing, a misrepresentation of what's going on.

And you have different brainwashing and misrepresentation with the christofascists. It's spiritual warfare to them, a war against Satan. I first became aware of how warped these people are when an evangelical not only recommended I read the book This Present Darkness - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Present_Darkness - but said she believed that even though it was fiction, it accurately represented a real spiritual warfare that was going on. That book was published nearly 40 years ago. A belief that people with different beliefs/lifestyles are demon-possessed is not compatible with democracy.

These people are still a minority of voters. But the splintering of news sources, and the ludicrous reliance on social media for news by people who have no idea if what's being posted is from a reliable source, have undermined rationality and an understanding of what's really going on. And our opponents want to undermine it further, getting rid of the Department of Education and public education, as much as possible. Generative AI is already making misinformation worse, more easily produced and more convincing.

There's a lot of work to do to reverse all of this, but it won't get done if Trump wins or manages to steal the election. And it won't be over when he's defeated.

We need all the allies we can get.

Abortion rights are lose-lose for Republicans. Trumps efforts to distance himself from the misogynist/purist wing loses him (and Repubs down ballot) votes either way.

but I bet not many Rs will switch because of them. At least not yet.

A much bigger resource is the 1/3 of USians who didn't vote in 2020. I've been calling that the Gray vote. There was a thread a few months ago spelling out the top reasons for non-voting. Obstacles to registration was a biggie, there were half a dozen listed.

"The other guy is a monster" doesn't work so well when most channels of information are busy normalizing him.

A third didn't vote, despite the horrors of T being fresh in short-term attention span, without 4 years of the corporate press sane-washing his pathology. It's tempting for some to sneer and call them idiots, but that won't bring out the vote, though judicious shaming might. This is too important to indulge in a feeling of superiority.
Ah, found the thread: https://democraticunderground.com/100219166382

We could make this about class exploitation and steal the Joe Sixpack cadre. The benefits of that would go far beyond 2024.

We're talking about a whole third of the US voting population, a chunk as big as Red Team and Blue Team. If we could get even a fraction of that chunk to vote, the numbers would be enough to beat the cheat. I think that would be easier and ore productive than chasing Rs. I say let the Rs wallow in their pollution, and go for a fresh bloc.

Then there are the impending legal actions Trump faces currently to worry them.
