Lawyer explains charges against father in Georgia school shooting

The father of the teen suspected of fatally shooting four people and wounding several others at a Georgia high school made his first court appearance Friday after being taken into custody Thursday. Colin Gray, 54, is facing more than a dozen charges stemming from the Wednesday shooting.

Gray has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of Involuntary Manslaughter and eight counts of child endangerment. His son has been charged with four counts of murder. According to 6 News legal analyst Greg Isaacs, parents being charged after a school shooting is a growing trend.

“What we are seeing is a trend nationally to hold parents responsible in what I would characterize as extreme cases,” Isaacs said.

The first example came with the Crumbley family following a school shooting in Michigan. Both parents in that case were charged and found guilty. Isaacs said the case in Winder, Georgia is similar to the 2021 Michigan school shooting.

“This is a case where another child had a cry for help,” Isaacs said. “The father a few months after a school shooting threat was investigated bought his son an assault rifle.”

First, let me explain that I don't have much use for Greg Isaacs, although he's very smart (ask me sometime). However, this explanation is very clear and makes sense. I hope the father is found guilty and I do hope this is part of a trend, because it's the only way school shootings will stop.

I repeat, a 14-year-old. who had spoken of shooting up his school a year earlier, how do you think it's a good idea to gift him with an assault rifle?

Just can't get anymore moronic. He's gonna do long time. And he should.

At 14, this kid has an assault rifle that's primary use is to kill a lot of people in a short period of time.
What kind of dumb ass parent buys a troubled child an assault rifle?
And please don't tell me it's a hunting rifle...unless you're hunting people.
I understand it doesn't have full automatic capability, but to say it isn't an assault rifle is simply splitting hairs. Soldiers use their m-16 rifles in semi-automatic mode most of the time to conserve ammunition and improve accuracy. Are they only assault rifles when the soldier flips the switch to go to full automatic?

The gun laws in Georgia are different then those in Michigan...in Georgia there is a minimum age when it comes to handguns, but not one when it comes to rifles and shotguns.

Under Federal law the age for all guns is 18, now the feds may have a case against the father, I would guess that they're waiting to see what happens.

We need to remember that the gun culture in Georgia is a bit more hardcore.

In Michigan a state permit is required to purchase long guns and handguns. Not in Georgia
Michigan requires that handguns be registered, Georgia doesn't.

Just because the parents were held accountable in Michigan it doesn't mean it will happen in Georgia.
