Most towns in the Old West had strict gun control laws. You come into town, you check your heat at the sheriff’s office, or the hotel’s desk, or someplace secure, and withdraw them right before you leave town.

The image of the Wild West as a no-holds-barred shoot-‘em-up, 24/7/365 is a Hollywood myth.

it wasn’t that wild. I a lot of towns you had to turn your firearms to the local sheriff while you were in town. Guns weren’t nearly as prevalent as they are now and obviously nowhere near as deadly since you might have 6 shots without reloading at best. At the time of the founding of the nation firearms were flintlock pistols and muzzle loaders; kind of difficult to go on a shooting rampage with either of those.
