Polio ravaged America in the 1950s and if there had been anti-vaccers then like there are today a lot of children would have been crippled. I knew someone who got polio as a child in the 1950s before the vaccine was available. He had one withered arm which he went through life with because of polio. As a child I never knew anyone who had polio because we were all vaccinated early in school.

I went to school with several people who had disabilities because of polio. When the vaccinations became available, my dad could not get us to the doctor soon enough. I have a small scar from a smallpox vaccine, too. Everyone in my school got those vaccinations. Some adults got them as well. We don't have to worry about smallpox any more. Let's keep it that way.
