The mother of the suspected Apalachee High School gunman told family members that she called the school on the morning of the shooting and warned a counselor about an extreme emergency involving her 14-year-old son, according to text messages obtained by The Washington Post and an interview with a family member.
That account is supported by a call log from the familys shared phone plan, which shows a 10-minute call from the mothers phone to the school starting at 9:50 a.m. about a half-hour before witnesses have said the gunman opened fire.
I was the one that notified the school counselor at the high school, Marcee Gray texted her sister following the shooting on Sept. 4, according to a screenshot of the exchange. I told them it was an extreme emergency and for them to go immediately and find [my son] to check on him.
A counselor told Gray during the call that her son had been talking about a school shooting that morning, according to Grays sister, Annie Brown, who described family discussions of the events to The Post.

(68,359 posts)Is she dropping a dime on her husband or us she trying to blame the school?
Or, was just the dad charged?

(68,359 posts)I know both parents got charged in the case in Michigan. Maybe I'm mixing the two cases.
The dad was definitely charged.

(68,359 posts)A week ago Friday I subbed at a big HS in a nearby city.
I remove my pocket knife and nail clippers when I go there because of metal detectors.
That day, I was not required to go through one, then I noticed NOBODY was going through the detectors.
I found that odd. Now we have this kid getting a gun into the school. Hmmm....
Cha
(302,626 posts)how that could have happened.. but of course I could have missed it.

(395 posts)At any rate, I've read that this school did not have metal detectors...

(35,875 posts)Hand-held metal detectors for the campus LEOs if there's somebody suspected of carrying a weapon. At least that's what I'm told, in 15 years I haven't actually seen one. (Same for the drug-sniffing K-9 unit. I've seen the car so labeled, but an actual canine? Just the "comfort dogs" one club had for petting after school one day a week a year or two back.)
5 large high schools (3500+ students each), with the feeder middle schools and crapload of feeder elementary schools. District keeps saying they're in the works but has been saying that for over 3 years.

(395 posts)probably the vast majority of schools do not, outside of the larger cities especially.

(68,359 posts)But, my point was that a HS I went to has them are weren't using them.
So, sneaking a gun in is not likely to be all that difficult a task.
Jack Valentino
(395 posts)and having them but not using them is certainly quite the security lapse...
you should speak up about that, I presume you will!

(273 posts)the shooter left the classroom, then came back but the teacher didn't let him back in. The student thought the email might have tipped the teacher off.
