Ali related to the role of "Jack Jefferson" (Jack Johhnson), and spent time with Jones during the time the play was produced (1967), to the filming of the movie (1970). This was the time period that Ali was in exile. In fact, the movie was released two weeks before Ali had the first fight of his comeback, against the tough top contender Jerry Quarry.

Got to hear him speak to a Detroit Film Theatre audience at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1996 or so.
If I could go back in time, I would ask him about portraying Barney Hill.

(32,387 posts)on a flight from L.A. to Chicago many years ago. My brother said he thought about it for some time before he decided to ask Jones for an autograph for one of his sons, who was a huge fan. Jones agreed and asked how should he address it? May the force be with you? My brother said, no, write "I wasn't here. This didn't happen." Upon hearing that Jones let out with one of his recognizable deep voiced laughs.
I wonder if my nephew, who was the recipient of the autograph, still has it.

(72,148 posts)I'll record Field Of Dreams just to watch the parts he was in.
Also, Bingo Long is a terrifically fun movie with a host of excellent black actors.
James plays a Josh Gibson-type character, but Richard Pryor, Billy Dee Williams, and many more.
Also, I'll DVR The Sandlot to watch the ending of the movie with him.
He was a fantastic presence in every movie I ever saw him in.

(72,148 posts)...it centers around Bingo's battle with the league owners and he takes a bunch of the best players on a barnstorming tour.
He's a Satchel Paige character, JEJ is Josh Gibson-like, they've got a Cool Papa Bell type guy, etc.
It's an extremely entertaining movie.
They are sort of the Globetrotters of baseball.
There are social issues covered, especially when they're touring the south.
If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. Fun & entertaining.

(20,196 posts)Even in a sub par movie, his performance was fabulous. In scenes where he had no lines, his presence, body language and expressions showed more depth of talent than the rest of the cast combined.
He was one of my all time favorites. Sadly missed.

(2,812 posts)...him from the legendary roles he played in truly stellar films, it's clear to me that Jones didn't always take himself or his job unduly seriously. As one example, check out the cinematic turkey that is City Limits (1985), a movie so bad it was satirized on Mystery Science Theater 3000. In addition to Jones, the cast includes Robby Benson, Rae Dawn Chong, and a very young Kim Cattrall.
Here's the full movie (MST3k version) at YouTube. There are lots of James Earl Jones jokes throughout, typically involving the comic imitation of Jones' basso profundo voice. There are a couple of especially funny scenes involving model planes fitted with explosives at 1:20:55 and 1:22:18.

(26,454 posts)It was nominated for a Grammy. She said she earned major point with her then adult sons when they found out that Darth Vader narrated their mom's book.
So many descriptions are calling his voice baritone. Sounds more basso profundo to me (I realize that is a musical designation).

(529 posts)I think in one of the plays that was still considered appropriate for a black actor, though things were changing before that. The impression still remains.
