According to the media, all of a sudden, all these millions of people are interested in issues and policy. Did these people fucking give a shit about policy when Trump said that the pandemic and the disease was a hoax and it would just disappear by itself? Were they issue-oriented when he made a deal with the Taliban and even invited them to Camp David for the big anniversary? Were they interested in the details of policy when he was separating families and imprisoning children in literal cages?
Of course, many of us were but apparently many Americans dont give a shit about policy as the media defines it. What they give a shit about is how they feel that day, and whether their favorite show was renewed for another season or if the package came from Home Shopping Network or equivalent. These Americans care about how their ball team does, or if they have children how they made out in school that day.
Americans do not sit around chess boards, trying to anticipate what is going to happen due to shifts in the policy of the federal reserve. They just go to refinance their mortgages and when they see what they believe to be a higher rate than theyd like, they refer back to the canard that the Democrats are to blame for
for everything.
Do you know how I know this? Because when Trump was nominated and elected president all those years ago, some of the Democrats started talking about nominating Oprah next time. This is the level of stupidity in this country, that anybody can do any job because how hard could it be?.
There is no question that there are millions of people with computers or handheld devices, as they call them, in this country who feel they could be president of a steel company or an airline or a pharmaceutical company because theres nothing to know. You just go in there and, look at the choices and say OK will do this one. This is really what they think.
The reason I know this is Ive had literally hundreds of people tell me this from being a senator or president down to managing a professional ball club. I could do a better job, I know this for a fact. Is a common expression I hear , these people are not kidding. They really do believe that in their heart of hearts.
As a going away present for this post, Ill tell you a funny story. I treated the sisters of an NBA coach who was fairly revered in the two cities in which he coached. One of the sisters told me a story that he was waiting in line for some food and a fellow came up to him and asked him why he hadnt made a certain substitution at a certain point and that he wasnt managing his players properly. and the coach looked at him and said, Well, I happen to know, and you do not, that all week in practice he couldnt hit a 12 foot jumpshot from any angle, which is something which figured in my decision . So I decided not to use him this week until he gets his act together. Apparently the guy just looked at him and slinked away.
The VP better just beat the shit out of him tonight or everyone on the tv is going to say that shes weak and not up to the job. No matter what, he will pronounce victory and utter defeat of his enemy. This is actually worse than professional wrestling, and I never thought I would be able to say that. He is the lowest of the lowest of the low and I cant write here what I wish.
There are three types of people: people who make things happen, people who watch things happen, and people who say, What happened?? Most Americans are in the last category
never forget it.

(15,135 posts)Cancel that. I fixed it.
But someone would surely get offended and alert on it.
I am already in the DU doghouse for a conspiracy theory, so I backed off.
The conspiracy will be proven true, when it's de-classified in 25 years. I'll be 100 then. So I am grabbing some vitamins right now, but not popcorn just yet.
THANKS.
I think I stole it from SNL.

(25,040 posts)is an attempt to derail her and discount her because she is using messaging that reaches the people, same as Trump and other MAGAs do in campaigns. But, Harris and Walz deliver an uplifting, positive message about what we can do and should do to make life better for everyone now and in the future.
The legacy media do not demand a policy layout from Trump like they do from Harris. On the few occasions when they do ask Trump a policy question, they blindly accept whatever gibberish response he gives as if it was a divine revelation.

(6,749 posts)The Dunning Kruger syndrome has been facilitated by social media - everybody's an expert now, and will damn well let you know it. Okay, I'm engaging in hyperbole to make the point.
Disclaimer: I'm not an expert in anything.

(6,258 posts)and the purposefully ignorant they share a media that whipsaws them back and forth and they don't even know or care that it's being done to them. That Tea Party ignorance went into larger bloom with the Freedom Caucus and from there we got the MAGA/GQP crazies in full bloom in a huge portion of the electorate.
They're still ignorant as hell whether naturally or purposefully but they think they're on top of the world with a red hat and an idiotic slogan.

(75,925 posts)I recognize that debates are important, but remember something my late father reminded me of back when Reagan was debating Mondale -- debating is not among a president's responsibilities. He compared presidential debates to Miss America beauty contests -- and added that he was glad the Kennedy vs Nixon was televised, rather than just carried on radio. But he thought that debates provided an accurate measure of how shallow most people were.

80% of everything is dominated by 20% of participants. Its almost a Fibonacci-based ratio somewhere. ✌️

(2,657 posts)While not true in every case politically of course there's more than a fair share of this going on. Most of the talking heads on broadcast and to a lesser extent print MSM are millionaires and they're being both paid by their multi/millionaire/billionaire corporate overlords and also being journalistically compromised by them in order to maintain a certain lifestyle. A large chunk of federal politicians (and to a smaller extent state and local) are millionaires whose campaigns are majority funded by at the least even wealthier millionaires and billionaires via dark PAC money and are being politically compromised by those big donor overlords. Of course the bills the Dems want to get passed if we can sweep (and I pray for all our sakes we do) immediately will go a long way to give "the average Joe" a louder voice as it should be.
I'm not saying this is a fact in every case, but there has been, especially over the last 50 years, a growing disparity between "the average Joe" and those that influence, make and report on public policy in this country to the point that these people are becoming more and more completely out of touch with those of us that have become individually financially irrelevant living paycheck to paycheck. Yes there are many, mostly in our party that try to stay in touch and work for all of us but still it is a gap that is ever widening and becoming harder to reach across IMO.
Wealth inequality is much more of an issue than just a majority who has to live paycheck to paycheck. It separates people at the very base of socioeconomic/political and most importantly emotional levels and that to me, is toxic as hell.

(276 posts)Shes only been the VP since 2021. The reason they dont know enough about her is because they never wanted to know anything. Same with policy. I hate to say it but the majority of the electorate dont know anything about the people they vote for. Not to mention the issues. I worked the polls in FL for 10 years and I got so disillusioned with the public and their stupidity, I had to stop. And that is what scares me to this day. Hence, why are the polls so close? Ignorance and laziness.

(23,140 posts)Except they made no assertion when dRumph was president and he touted his Infrastructure Week for over 200 weeks without the M$M asking him for details. But when TSF did produce his plan, it was bound blank copy paper, that looked like a published book. No upheaval though from the M$M! I guess policy wasn't as important then as it is today. It ebbs and flows.

(15,131 posts)showing up in publicly traded media outlets (NBC is owned by Comcast, ABC by Disney, and FOX owns Fox and the WSJ. The NYT is publicly traded.
The fiduciary responsibility of these media executives is ONLY to generate higher profits for shareholders. There is literally nothing in there about 'truth in news reporting'.
So, we have a horserace - 'It's gonna be a real squeaker, coming down to a few thousand votes in a couple of swing states.' Better for shareholder profits becaust a) it boosts ratings, which creates more advertising revenue, and b) campaigns have to advertise, and we're seeing billion dollar ad buys.
It is ALWAYS about Wall Street shareholder profits. ALWAYS.
This is why ABC has opted not to fact check Trumpy tonight. Better for shareholder PROFITS, but not better for truth.
This was on purpose. People are forgetting Lewis Powell's manifesto that laid out the plan for a corporate takeover of the republic, which has nearly been achieved. Many in the US electorate weren't even born in 1971 when he wrote that evil plan. And in 1987 when Reagan killed the old Fairness Doctrine.
These poor widdle billionaires just don't have enough money, don't you know, so they want more at our expense, which is what Project 2025 is all about. Because if he gets in power and they do the $2 trillion tax cut for billionaires and corporations, they will have to raise our taxes - mine will go up by $2500.
So it is easy to see that these Wall Street profit-driven greed lizards WANT our electorate to be ignorant. God knows, if we all had the ACTUAL TRUTH, the GOP would have gone down the drain years ago.
