"Vice President Harris: Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We will not take anybody's guns away. We can support the Second Amendment as I do and also agree that we need some reasonable laws. We don't want our kids or anyone to live with that kind of fear, and there are things we can do about it"

That said, hopefully the Secret Service would stop any threat before Ms Harris had to take matters into her own hands.

(12,614 posts)with a statement (such as this) making a rather solid and substantive point. Why waffle, when the statement clearly doesn't?

(14,293 posts)She's basically saying that if anyone were break into their home, they would be shot, whether by her, her husband or the Secret Service, which is perfectly legal.
I would also, if someone is willing to enter my home uninvited, they are going to get a very rude welcome.

(13,351 posts)And a couple paintball "guns". Anyone trying to break into my house is going to be messed up by me, my spouse, or my cats.
Goblin has twice jumped up and immediately stalked and seriously attacked the ankles of a person entering the house. and fat Eris ran up to tangle and trip them as they tried to get Goblin off them. One was a twitchy delivery helper who was helping the driver deliver the new refrigerator and the other guy had come over to estimate a service who was later found to be associated with several home burglaries.
They are my roving home security systems.
I have never needed firearms. Though I do keep the paintball guns and the sword in our bedroom and Laz keeps one loaded "just in case".
They can break ribs if an intruder is not wearing pads.

(24,017 posts)showed up for a routine Medicare home checkup, my cat eyed the doc cautiously. I sat at my kitchen table with the doc in a chair at a right angle to me.
The cat immediately sat on the floor between the doc and me and watched the doc very attentively. When the doc put a BP cuff on my arm, the cat stood up and faced the doc. When the doc puffed up the BP cuff, the cat growled at her. Doc immediately stopped and moved back.
I tried to assure the cat that it was ok, but she would not stop growling. Had to close her in the bathroom until the doc left.

(64,756 posts)I would like to hear more about why she feels the need to have the gun in the first place, particularly if it is kept loaded. In my instance a family member with no record of any violence whatsoever got enraged over a family issue and he was drunk. The gun he had was kept. loaded, in the drawer next to his bed. He was angry, drunk and went for the gun. It was all too easy for someone to get shot and it was my niece.
So I would like to know more about why she feels she should have a loaded gun in her house in the first place. I know that there are plenty of people who have guns in their homes and there is no violence. However, I would plead with her not to say anything more about it. Let this issue alone now.

(20,715 posts)and has been responsible for the incarceration of many less-than-upstanding members of society she would see a benefit in being prepared to defend herself. In her position I'm sure she encountered more than a couple cases where the 911 response to a home break in arrived in time to document a murder scene.
My most sincere condolences on your loss.

(14,293 posts)I too lost a family member, not to firearm violence, but to a drunk driver, so I know the pain, but VP Harris has her own reasons for owning and keeping a firearm in her home and I won't question or second guess her decision.

(11,934 posts)But I understand politically why she would say it.

(6,463 posts)and politically, I don't think it hurts her too much to say this and might alleviate some concerns

(4,874 posts)It was the 70's. It was a wreck of a house in a "Bad Neighborhood". I bought it for $1450.00. It was snowing outside. We were asleep.
Some commotion in the entry hallway. Wife wakes up and starts shouting out a list of names usually associate with the male gender. I wake up. WTF? There's more commotion. Guy leaves. No shooting necessary. Wife says she was shouting names to make the guy think there were lots of people in the bedroom so he better leave. Apparently a drinker, maybe a former resident, or mistakenly picked the wrong house...anyway, although I had a gun and was young and stupid, nobody got hurt and now 50 years later I can rest easy that I've never hurt anyone ever...if you don't count the bicyclist that ran into the side of my car 60 years ago.

(15,282 posts)"Get rid of all the guns" is a losing proposition for any politician.
But saying she owns a gun and "would shoot an intruder," etc. is good politics and may help her win.
(She has Secret Service protection, and that kind of rhetoric is total bullshit. What bothers me is that she has to throw in this bullshit to win over single issue voters.)
If Donald Trump said he owned a gun, I would wonder how long it would be before he actually shot someone on 5th Ave.

(20,715 posts)he has an NYC carry permit. Strangely that elite list is populated with a disproportionate number of recognizable names. It seems the permits consider wealth and status more than need.
(Of course given his recent convictions I expert that permit will soon be revoked, if it hasn't been yet.)
