I'm 20 years older than when I started advocating on this board, and I'm finding I'm less and less willing, and most importantly able, to be available for the confrontations that I'm apparently responsible for because of this disagreement or that with something or the other I've said here and there.
Those confrontations have gotten so challenging for me that I realize I'm just not up to it right now, so I fear I shouldn't say as much as 'boo' out of concern that I might attract someone eager to set me straight.
I don't mind answering, but it's been situation after situation where my answers don't suffice, and I'm not getting paid for this, and it does get a bit physically challenging, no, exhausting, to maintain a cogent and correct discussion, so I'm stepping off for a while and just reading and watching events on tv.
I usually like the back and forth, but it's felt strangely adversarial from quarters that I thought I knew well. That's a pity to me. I wish I was more able. Maybe after a little while to rest my eyes and my mind.
I'll be following along right with folks here, so all the best.
-Ron.

Ehhh, Bigtree, don't take it personally. More often than not it's about them, not you. Wrong side of the bed syndrome. I've done it myself.

Thank you for your posts, appreciate them.

(1,875 posts)Some folk will lash out at people who they actually feel safer with rather than risk uncovering the real depth of their feelings and going after the people who actually disturb them.
It may not make sense on the surface, but not everyone is emotionally intelligent enough to process everything through before blurting out their feelings to people aren't really the source of the problem.

(27,298 posts)Insinuating that DUers supporting Democrats on a forum for supporters of the Democratic Party are secretly Republicans, the Democratic Party is too stupid and naive not to casually hand over the party car keys to Liz Cheney, etc.

(84,573 posts)Otherwise, how can you come up with your wise posts that give the rest of us guidance and perspective so often?
Hey, it happens. I suspect itll happen to all of us at some point, especially during disharmonious times like elections (and THIS election in particular)!
Get some rest. And just read in when it occurs to you to do so, Ron. Dont feel too obligated. Well still be here. To love and care and enlighten and learn and annoy - and certainly to gossip! And, hopefully to celebrate next month! And besides, Halloween is coming up! Keep a funny hat by the front door with the candy bowl and youll be presentable for the Trick-or-Treaters! Halloween is always fun and frivolous, and it sounds like you could use some frivolity right about now!

(10,392 posts)Posters who were normally as civilized could be, were losing it time and time again. And I wondered if anyone could actually see themselves. I didn't post much, I just sat and read and watched.
The stress and the depression was getting to everyone.
And I see it happening again. Everyone is wound up as tight as can be.
I read your posts and I really enjoy them. And I totally understand why you would want to take a break. So relax and put your feet up, and know that this crazy bunch of people will still be here when you're ready to come back!

(2,642 posts)You are one of the go to posters for reason in my book. I may disagree on some finer points with posters occasionally but I never attack other posters in what would seem like a personal way and trust me, I know how it feels and sometimes truly deserve it lol. I hope you don't stay gone long your input on this board is greatly appreciated by many including myself, especially with the election coming up. There's going to be a lot of crapola tossed by the other side and we need voices of reason. Especially with any of the legal stuff coming at us. Take your time if need be but know you are greatly appreciated.

(2,522 posts)people can't seem to let something go that they don't agree with or that they can "correct." Some people want dominance and not dialog. They get their sensitivities lit on a post that's not within whatever orthodoxy they observe and they lash out. They can't just shrug and scroll past. Some of those condescenti tend to get banned eventually and, well, no tears here.

(193 posts)First, "Some people want dominance and not dialog" - ain't that the truth.
condescenti =/= cognoscenti
Be well out there in reading-only land, bigtree, and come back to posting soon

(51,200 posts)There are some people unable to agree to disagree. And others who reject any criticism. Though they are the exceptions among DU members, the confrontation can take lots of time and energy. The thing is, one can make a comment and find oneself a couple of hours later twenty posts down a rabbit hole.
So I commiserate but hope that the quiet period is brief and that you find a way to be a combination of stronger and a bit more detached (for your sake).
If you never posted again on DU, it would be the loss of a good voice here and that would be very unfortunate. You are always welcome back.

and find news topics that have been missed on the DU and post them. Nobody expects me to discuss at this point because they know I am a big picture person and not into the details. You could do that and skip the discussions.
I am taking a break too for other reasons so I get that DU is not always the place to be. Hope you come back after a bit. I will be lurking too.

(25,368 posts)You get it,
Your posts are what we should be posting, the narratives that should be posted. We get too many TSF posts.
I will miss your posts, but you must do what is best for you. I also feel the adversity from quarters I thought I knew well so I understand your feelings.
Last comment of mine is important for you to know, you stuck to our narratives, Democrats have trouble keeping the narrative which is so important. Come back when you see fit, especially to celebrate our victory.

(18,928 posts)At this moment in time, it seems our most important task here should be holding together in Unity to fight off the nefarious trolls, and to strongly support our Blue candidates.
Unfortunately, it's sometimes difficult to recognize and resist the attempts at division and distraction, let alone challenge them successfully.

(25,849 posts)It's like "You're wrong, I'm right. End of discussion.
Not all but some. Used to be we could have a constructive dialogue. Not saying there isn't a lot of that going on today. Just seeing more and nasty comments when someone disagrees with a post.
DU is still a great discussion board. There's a lot of caring and support throughout the other forums. But GD can be a pretty tough environment at times. Then again, look at what's going on in the world...
Our election, although I can't believe anyone on DU would be at odds with the Harris/ Walz team.
The Israel conflict with Palestine, Gaza, Lebanon and other Mideast countries.
Ukraine's conflict with Russia.
So much going on.
I can understand your need to step away for a while. Hopefully you'll be back and continue to be a n important contributor.

(18,221 posts)Your contributions are much appreciated by me (among the many others here), although I myself am no longer the prolific poster I once was (life had different ideas). I frequently write a post or reply and then delete it rather than than actually post it, because I know I won't want to - or have time to - deal with certain types of responses.
Enjoy your break, and see you on the other side!

(1,114 posts)And there is a lot of that happening lately. You can't fight every strawman argument, and the gaslighting is also getting out of control.
I hope you all the best bigtree.
