Ferrets are Cool

We, wifey and I, had a bit of a special event Friday afternoon. We ate out for the first time since she got sick 5

years ago. It might not sound like much, but it was a great day for us. She is an amazing person, having overcome kidney cancer, stage 4 lymphoma, a brain infection caused by a badly mismanaged Ommaya reservoir, and leukemia brought about my all the chemo from the lymphoma. For all she has been through, she is doing fantastic.
Now to the event on Friday. She loves hot and sour soup and I have gotten it for her as take out several times in the last year, but for her to be able to actually order it in our favorite Asian restaurant was wonderful. She also got her favorite main dish, moo goo gai pan. She always says, I'm gonna try something different today, but ends up getting the same thing every time.
Just thought I would share some good news.
Thanks for being here, my friends.

Such simple joys are not much in cost, but the act of going out, getting the meals, and eating them, in each other's company, amid the hubbub of the typical restaurant crowd, of others enjoying their food too, is unmeasurable.

Thanks for sharing this precious experience w/ us.

Even now on the occasional meal out, we get there about 5:30ish. That way the restaurant is pretty empty.

People think you only have Covid to worry about, far from it. I finally finished all my "childhood" vaccines in the spring.

I am glad your wife is doing well.

A tip, if she is experiencing charlie horses, eat a banana a day.

The YMCA offers a free program called Livestrong for Cancer survivors. When she is up to it, check it out. It is 12 weeks and they give you a free membership as long as you attend the classes.

The smaller point, yet still important, is that your wife has, IMO, made an excellent culinary choice. My friends and I first discovered hot and sour soup at a Chinese restaurant near Broadway and Kingsway in Vancouver. We were all captivated, in varying degrees, and I started making it, sometimes with seemingly odd variations.

Lime juice as the acidulant, for example, and fresh coriander as an optional additive. The only problem is....my wife and our best friends all have the palates of toddlers, and I'm forced to make a rather bland version, then hope to be able to flavour it appropriately at the table.

Cheers to you both, and chi de you weikou!
