Very often I read in DU about cable news commentators. I am the grandma in a multigenerational household and my millennial kids and Gen Z grandkids have never, ever turned on a cable news show, but they are totally aware of everything. So I looked up where people get news. I myself basically get my news from DU since I dont control a TV. https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/fact-sheet/news-platform-fact-sheet/

(27,832 posts)Back in the 70's I religiously read the Boston Globe every day. A truly great newspaper. I haven't bought a newspaper in 20 years.

(3,074 posts)fairly demonstrate how as much as 70% of Republicans' main source of news is Fux. Whereas Democrats have broader sources.
Here's one of them:

Life's too short for bullshit, lies, ads and flame wars.
Enjoy, and fight like hell for what's right.

(397 posts)I cannot stand not knowing whats going on.
Up until about seven years ago, I was subscribed to my local paper and statewide paper. Over time, most of the papers would go unwrapped into the garbage can. I ran out of time, plus both papers, over time, were increasingly being filled with tons of national and global news. Im sorry, but I dont want to get my national and global news coming from Arkansas papers. I suppose small papers can easily and inexpensively buy their national and global news from the likes of AP, NYT, etc. I dropped both papers just before COVID.
Other than the local weather, I no longer have need for local and state tv stations. Those stations used to be important for sports, too. No longer!
And I used to be big on watching the evening network news (I preferred NBC!). 5:30 PM (I live in Central time.) is too early, so i went for a while recording the broadcasts. Over time, I realized there were very few stories I would hear about hours that I didnt already know about hours earlier from the internet.
Whether coming from radio, TV, or newspapers, all suffer from a significant lag versus the internet.
I may lose my account for this, but X (I hate that name!!!) is my favorite and most frequent source for news. And X really isnt the source; rather, its a pretty good conduit for many of the same new sources that I no subscribe to on a direct basais.
I generally have the TV on mostly news channels or new programs. Mostly, I have it CNN or MSNBC. But, I will flip to CNBC, FoxNews, Weather Channel, BBC International, and ESPN News ocassionally.
X has its issues, for sure. But, if one subscribes on X to reliable news sources, it is a great aggregator of current events. And there can be robust debate amongst users, too.
When EM bought twitter, I moved over to Mastedon. After six months, I grew weary explaining to people what it was. I could count on one hand the number of people I knew that were active on Mastedon. I knew a few lurkers, but most of them were like me and eventually faded from Mastedon.
I hear people frequently bitching about how vitriolic X is for them. If they say that, it tells me they likely engage with purveyors of the vitriol. As someone who rarely feels compelled to get down in the mud virtual speaking, my X newsfeed is pretty clean from the deplorables basket.
Until a few months after EM bught X, the near- and soft-porn have posts nearly disappeared. Now, its rare to see adds with a shirtless, over-muscled twink going commando in grey joggers or 20-year-old single mom of twos OnlyFans page. Things are much cleaned up on this front.
To get access to the X AI tool (Grok), I had to subscribe to X. That gives me a mostly ad-free verson of X. Now, my newseed is full of several Harris- and DNC-affiliated groups, CNN, MSNBC, WSJ, dozens of Democratic pols at all levels, sports teams I follow, my church, and many other groups and individuals I want to follow. I am vigilant in keeping my newsfeed free of people I dont want to hear from. Its not hard to do.
Almost daily, Im in a conversation about some current event. Im nearly always ahead of everyone else.
I dont like EMs politics and think Teslas are just ugly virtue signalers, but I like X.

(53,381 posts)Their main news sources are Instagram and Youtube, particularly viral videos. They don't watch cable TV, they don't watch regular TV, they don't read newspapers or magazines.
It's fucking scary.

(53,381 posts)MSNBC is not scary. It is fact based. Fox News and OAN is indeed pure propaganda. But it's also an older crowd.
I haven't heard my son mention tiktok. As the OP articles notes, tiktok is favored more by women than men. https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/fact-sheet/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet/
Gen Z, particularly the men, watch YouTube and Instagram. And that is all about viral posts, which more often than not is false or misleading when it comes to news, and has a right wing slant. And Gen Z doesnt factcheck. That's scary. You can disagree all you want, but that is reality.

(185,875 posts)11% has the same nonsense hammered into them all day. 21% sometimes could just mean they flip through it (like I do) and they are still getting a purposely screwed up message.
So 1in 10 to 1 in 3
somewhere in between there.

(38,787 posts)My wife and I have digital subscriptions to several local, national, and international papers. We read most of our news. We also support our local public radio station.
Aside from a few technical sites where discussions of politics and religion are unacceptable my only "social media" is DU.
Television news and opinion is a Gish gallop of crap that leaves people little time to exert their critical thinking skills before it moves on to the next distraction.
Twitter, or whatever the hell it is now, is similar. It's long been blacklisted on my computers.
Our children and their cousins don't pay any attention at all to "traditional" television, cable or broadcast. It's all internet. That's probably not a good thing. Whatever you are watching on the internet it's also watching you.
