It's the size of the pie and the size of the slice you get, STUPID.
Fuck the Bill Clinton era concern with the "economy." Today, the stock market is at a record high, but the majority of Americans still feel some degree of financial insecurity. Despite the fact that the U.S. economy is expanding, most folks simply cannot make ends meet. Why? Because the wealthy take the lion's share of the pie (both in terms of income and wealth), leaving a relatively dinky slice for the rest of us to share. Nobody disagrees with this fact. And, ironically, both parties agree that reapportionment is needed. The size of the slices everyone gets needs to change. Yeah, right on! We're all united on at least one issue...Until, we get around to deciding how to get you a bigger slice. Democrats take the Robin Hood approach, suggesting that we cut into that giant slab going to the wealthy and pass some around among the rest of us. Which sounds great - unless your name is Bezos or Musk or Zuckerberg. And here is where things get tricky. In a process almost akin to transubstantiation, Republicans (even super rich ones) are okay with you getting a bigger slice - just so long as you make it appear from somewhere else. But, in order for that work, they have to engage in something Republicans have typically railed against - class warfare. Not the Robin Hood and his merry men up against the King and his Lords kind of class warfare though. No, this has to be a class warfare that pits the middle and lower classes against those who are barely subsisting. Those recent immigrants hanging out at Home Depot looking for work? Just imagine how much more pie you'd get if those immigrants were deported! That Dreamer enrolled in a state college? Just imagine how much more pie your kid would get if that Dreamer was deported! That "Black job" that immigrant took from you? You'd have more pie if that immigrant was deported! There's nothing wrong with wanting a bigger slice of pie for you and your family - especially if you work hard. However, how you go about it matters. Because if you're going to align yourself with gluttons, the next slice they'll be coming for will be yours.
