Its too late to change his name on the ballot. Any vote for trump/vance electors would still be counted, but if the ticket wins, vance would be sworn in.

Remember, we dont vote for a person. We vote for electors, who vote for the candidate they support.

Its the electors who will cast votes, which get certified and made official. If they say vance is the potus, then he gets sworn in.

If anything is even done, it will be a zoom call-like "convention" of GOP leaders, and they would almost certainly vote Vance as the head of the ticket. They might not even do that formality. The only question would be who Vance's running mate would be.

It’s not a unique situation, just hasn’t happened in the POTUS race. Ticket remains, and if he wins (also applies if he’s dead), that’s what the VP candidate is for, and we get POTUS Shady.
