I'll tell you why the election is so fucking close. It's the media. I forget that most people don't get their news from DU or other online sources. They get their news from local news maybe CNN or Fox. I listened to trumps interview in Chicago today. I saw a complete failure by him to give any competent answers to any questions. I saw a child whine and complain about the interviewer and others who dared to challenge him. Then I watched my local news and I saw them describe what I witnessed as trump received a standing ovation when introduced. I saw answers to questions that to the uninformed sound wonderful but never heard the question itself. Like " if your policies are used it will add 15 billion to the debt. If you policy is used it will cost millions of jobs. If your policy is used it will destroy relations with our allies. So he lies about knowing how tariffs work and the effects but the majority of the country never hears it. Watchers of local news and those that sit home glued to fox will never hear it. Contrast that with coverage of President Biden and V P Harris and now you know how the election is so fucking close. Damn, where's the Tylenol.

It's not like much that you find on social media is original journalism. It's mostly either commentary on/repetition of other news sources, or straight-up BS that's pulled out of someone's ass.

(17,775 posts)I think many progressives are missing the elephant in the room when it comes to misinformation. For example, look on DU and you see many attacks on traditional media. But, these attacks actually miss what has changed in that most people today are not getting their news from traditional media outlets, but from unvetted sources like social media that recommend stories based on clicks, which of course encourages misleading clickbait. Worse, these algorithms serve to amplify hateful, false content, and can be gamed by bad actors such as Russia or right winger's like Trump.
For example, you rarely see the mysogynist Andrew Tate on TV or in the news, except when he is getting charged with a crime. Yet, he has a large following on social media as an influencer among young men selling a lifestyle that is built on the subjugation of women.
https://www.theguardian.com/media/2024/feb/06/social-media-algorithms-amplifying-misogynistic-content
Algorithms used by social media platforms are rapidly amplifying extreme misogynistic content, which is spreading from teenagers screens and into school playgrounds where it has become normalised, according to a new report.
Researchers said they detected a four-fold increase in the level of misogynistic content suggested by TikTok over a five-day period of monitoring, as the algorithm served more extreme videos, often focused on anger and blame directed at women.
While this particular study looked at TikTok, researchers said their findings were likely to apply to other social media platforms and called for a healthy digital diet approach to tackling the problem, rather than outright bans on phones or social media which are likely to be ineffective.
The study, by teams at University College London and the University of Kent, comes at a time of renewed concern about the impact of social media on young people. Research last week found young men from generation Z many of whom revere social media influencer Andrew Tate are more likely than baby boomers to believe that feminism has done more harm than good.
With social media with its algorithms for recommending stories, you could end up getting a steady feed of articles talking about immigrants eating household pets without any whiff of the major media stories about Trump ducking debates or saying stuff that is crazy.
I think the OP has it backwards in blaming the media, when the truth is that the traditional media has significantly diminished in importance, as they rely heavily on social media platforms for their news and information, which do not have any mechanisms for validating the accuracy of posts or stories.

(4,744 posts)The paper is a sad joke, a whisper of what it once was. The coverage of the election, of Trump especially, is that it is just a normal, ho-hum presidential election.
Trump talks about eating dogs and cats, the paper says he spoke about immigration and his views. Trump talks about using the military against domestic adversaries, the paper ignores it. Nazi supporters participate in Trump events, ignored. Trump blathers, speaks word salad, insults allies and Americans alike and the paper reports he spoke to supporters to outline his policies for a second term.
Biden got the crap beat out of him every single day and Trump gets a pass.
It's infuriating.

(17,775 posts)Two common themes I see on DU are (1) people who are incredulous or in disbelief that the race is tied given how much Trump lies and (2) blame towards traditional media for failing to inform people of Trump's lies notwithstanding the fact that it easy to find stories on ABC, CNN, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, NY Times and the Washington Post identifying Trump's many lies.
This themes are misguided and are based on an outdated understanding of where people get their news and information, which is through social media where stories and videos are not recommended based on accuracy of reliability, but based on algorithms that value the propensity to click a story, which means that sensationalistic, emotional content is always likely to have an advantage.
This is not the first time this has happened. In the Philippines, the people elected the son of a brutal dictator, which was driven in part by a coordinated disinformation campaigns on social media platforms, especially through videos, that takes advantage of the fact that social media has no mechanism to vet for accuracy, so you can run campaigns based on misinformation and sensationalism.
This is why many health professionals, including the current Surgeon General, has recommended add warning labels to social media to advise users of the risks of disinformation and perhaps disclosure regarding how social media platforms recommend stories to users, particularly if the recommendations are not based on accuracy of reliability.

One of the most popular posts on Joey Toledos TikTok account is a 13-second clip of Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr.s conversation with Juan Ponce Enrile. In the video, the 94-year-old Enrilewho served as justice secretary and defense minister under Marcos father, the Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.claims that the Philippines was so safe under martial law imposed by the elder Marcos that a Filipino could leave his home unlocked, and nobody would touch it.
The video received 92,000 views, and while Toledo has some doubts about Enriles claims (Im not just sure if [Enriles] story is 100% percent accurate because hes already old), the 27-year-old says he believes Enrile knows what happened during that time.
The appeal of the video on TikTok, and many others like it, goes a long way to explaining why Bongbong Marcos looks likely to win the May 9 presidential electionpotentially returning one of the Philippines most prominent dynasties to power more than 35 years after it was ousted following decades of dictatorship.
Almost all of the 32 pro-Marcos TikTok creators TIME contacted would not speak on the record. But one, Toledo from Nueva Ecija province, some 69 miles north of the capital Manila, agreed. Typical of many of his peers, he does not believe the well documented history of the Marcos familys human rights abuses and corruption.

(113,131 posts)have been flooding in to media since mid September. They're trying to set up another round of "stop the steal" and other prevarication topped with idiocy and violence.
It's also an attempt to appeal to the bandwagon fallacy, "all these other people can't be wrong," but I don't think that part is going to work, everybody is seeing TFG lose the plot with increasing rapidity. They know everybody on his bandwagon is wrong.
So I think this is just another run up to another "I wuz rubbed" only most of the people willing to do violence over it are still in jail, fresh out of jail, or waiting to be sentenced to jail, with or without big fines to pay, over the last go-round of it.
Yes, there will be some violence, but it will be sporadic and most likely alcohol f8ueled.
It looks like GOTV is happening. That's never good news for Republicans and other crooked fascists.

(2,221 posts)social media, this social media is strongly reflective of what they, and their friends and family believe. This "news" is reinforced by the "news" that they get in church, at the high school football game, from their co-workers, friends, and family. These people may watch Fox propaganda, but they probably aren't watching any real news. It is rare that someone can break out of this echo chamber which is comprised of almost everyone and everything in their lives, especially because the penalty for going against the flow is likely the loss of relationships and even their job.

(17,775 posts)The theme of outrage I see on DU regarding why the race is so close given how often Trump lies and the fact that he is largely avoiding interviews by regular journalists is based on an outdated understanding of where millions of Americans get their news and information, which is social media.
Unlike traditional journalism, there is no vetting of stories, particularly stories that are recommended, based on accuracy. To the contrary, stories are recommended based on propensity to click, which favors outrageous, emotionally laden, conspiracy filled stories. Thus, the more outrageous and detached a candidate is, particularly when they are supported by a cult like following, the more likely misinformation will spread as was the case in Philippines.
Worse, with social media, there is no warning that indicates the social media recommendations are not based on accuracy or reliability even though you would normally believe that a recommendation would be based on accuracy. In other words, with Yelp or Amazon, people generally tend to prefer products and vendors with a lot of recommendations. In contrast, with social media, a video will gain traction if it repeatedly clicked regardless of accuracy. There is no disclosure regarding the ranking algorithm that social media platforms use. Indeed, many users of social media are under the assumption that social media is more reliable, because it is based on their own searches, because they do not know the basis for why certain stories are recommended and pushed.

To say that Marcos Jr won the presidential election by using social media as a propaganda tool is no exaggeration.
Bongbong masterminded a years-long strategic campaign on social media that has helped rebuild and polish his familys image. Pro-Marcos propaganda has proliferated on social media from glossy TikTok clips showing fun times during the Marcos era to YouTube videos declaring there was no martial law.
An official from political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica reportedly said it was approached by Marcos Jr to delete unfavourable records of the Marcos regime on social media platforms so he could gain momentum in the election.
