(27,362 posts)Is Jeffrey Dahmer evidence that there isn't a just and good God?
If evil or however one chooses to define someone like Trump is the sole determining factor, there have been innumerable examples prior to Trump, many of them arguably much worse than he is.
The question also presumes that whatever god might exist has an active interest in humanity and tilts the scales in one direction or another.

(27,362 posts)He's only proof of something if other things are assumed to be true, such as a god having active influence on humanity.
There could be a just and good god that simply doesn't have the ability or the inclination to interfere with free will.
edhopper
(34,563 posts)The Free Will argument is negated by Dahmer's victims not having the free will not to be brutally murdered.
And as Epicurius would say, if he has neither the ability or inclination to stop evil, why call him God?

(185,979 posts)Russell's teapot is an analogy, formulated by the philosopher Bertrand Russell (18721970), to illustrate that the philosophic burden of proof lies upon a person making empirically unfalsifiable claims, as opposed to shifting the burden of disproof to others.
Russell specifically applied his analogy in the context of religion.[1] He wrote that if he were to assert, without offering proof, that a teapot, too small to be seen by telescopes, orbits the Sun somewhere in space between the Earth and Mars, he could not expect anyone to believe him solely because his assertion could not be proven wrong.

(16,783 posts)...as we're reminded everytime we discover things that we previously believed didn't exist.
The only thing I don't get is why it's so hard for people to admit they simply don't know, for sure, if a thing exists or not, but that's probably just the Agnostic in me.

(34,563 posts)I see no evidence for the exist of a God (rather than know or not know)
If I said the same thing about Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster or fairies, people would not tell me I should not be closed minded and I can't "know it" That it is 50/50.

(10,675 posts)In formal logic and mathematics, proving negatives is possible within defined systems. For example, proving there is no solution to this equation or no integer exists between 1 and 2 is straightforward within those frameworks. The difficulty comes when attempting to prove negatives in empirical contexts, like ghosts do not exist. In such cases, its hard to prove a universal absence since evidence could potentially appear somewhere unknown.
I prefer to say you cant prove an unfalsifiable claim.

Trump is the antichrist, so there has to be a God.

(14,936 posts)Have you read the Bible? It is stuffed with stores about despicable men, whom God put into positions of power over people, and showered with his favor and his blessings. It's not the least bit out of character for that particular god to choose someone like Trump to rule over the US.

(3,210 posts)According to a Rabbi, God gave humans free will. It is therefore each individuals own responsibility to choose their own actions. If a person chooses to act like a disgusting piece of vermin(my words not the Rabbi's) that's on him or her not God. God can only give strength to those who seek it to carry on in hard times, and also decides the ultimate destination of one's soul after they die on earth.
There is also the philosophy that everything and everyone has both good points and bad points. Like a fire can warm you when you're cold, but it could also burn your house down. Water can quench your thirst or kill you, if you drown in it. In people we chose which side we want to use the most.
tfg always chooses to show his evil side.

(3,210 posts)war, famine, disease etc are in most cases not the ones doing the choosing . It's the people like Trump, Musk, Hitler, Stalin, Putin, etc who are choosing greed and power, over caring about other people and the earth we live on. They choose to be selfish and evil.
The theory about the duality of being isn't even of Christian-Judeo origin. I believe the concept goes all the way back to the ancient Greeks.
I am not trying to sell anyone on faith in God. I am giving my personal response to the question asked. In my opinion just because evil people do evil things doesn't necessarily equate to proof that God doesn't exist. Also in many Christian religions there is the belief that the evil side of human nature comes from the devil aka satan.
I have my own reasons for believing in God that I will refrain from sharing, because I also respect others right not to believe.

(34,563 posts)what about the free will of the women he raped or the people he stole from. What about the free will of the women who can't have medical care because of him.
Beyond the philosophical discussion of what is free will. The argument that there is evil because of free will is a non starter.
MerrilyMerrily
(180 posts)The definition is - a human being has free will to hurt people, or help them. or just leave them alone. If the choice is to hurt someone else, the victim will suffer, or even die. That has nothing to do with whether or not the person who did the harm exercised free will.
edhopper
(34,563 posts)God allows evil to exist because we have free will to choose evil or good. But this same God, supposedly good an loving, gives one person to choose innumerable suffering to dozens or hundreds or millions. So this God thinks the free will choice of one person can take all choice away from millions of others.
The fate of that person's soul is more important to God, no matter how evil their acts are, than the anguish, suffering and life of millions of others.
This doesn't even touch on if people who are mentally ill have this God given free will.
It is just Christian bullshit to account for why their so called loving God allows the world to be so fucked up. But the logic of it doesn't hold.
lees1975
(5,550 posts)And he bears responsibility.
In Christian theology, humanity is next to divinity. Jesus elevated respect for humanity to the same level as respect for God, Matthew 22:29, equating the commandment to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind," with "Love your neighbor as yourself."
Support for Trump, from people claiming to be Christian, is a symptom of the complete breakdown of conservative Evangelicalism in the United States. Violating the free will of another human being is equal to blaspheming God.
Does that work a little better now?

Jmb 4 Harris-Walz
(619 posts)From Genesis 6-9, the Bible teaches that God found his creation of man had become corrupt, evil, and filled with violence, and it grieved him. He determined to destroy the wickedness on earth, both man and beast. Other than those aboard Noahs Ark, God destroyed every living thing on earth by sending 40 days and 40 nights of rain, the water prevailing for 150 days, flooding and killing all upon earths surface.
Trump is allowed to exist because, after the flood, God promised to never again curse the earth by destroying every living thing as he had done with the flood.
However, by the grace of God, Trump will definitively lose the election by a significant margin. Then Jack Smith can go forth with his cases against him and send his evil lying fat a$$ into semi solitary confinement where hell never be able to spew his nasty filth upon the U.S. population again!

He committed awful crimes almost four years ago and has never spent a night in jail. He is a convicted felon and they allow him to run for president. And now he has a very good chance of being elected again. Im watching as the polls start improving for him towards the end just like with Hillary.
