Two weeks from Tuesday, millions of voters across the country will fan out to polling places.
And when they do, there will reportedly be a GOP-backed, 200,000-strong army of volunteers watching them. Their task? Establish the battlefield to challenge the results of the election, should former president Donald Trump lose.
Thats according to a new report in the New Yorker that sheds light on the inner workings of the Republican National Committees planled by Trumps daughter-in-law Lara and Michael Whatley, its co-chairsto use a giant grassroots group of Trump worshippers to question the integrity of the election.
In June, the RNC announced that the so-called Protect the Vote tour would make a series of stops in swing states to train volunteers to ensure it is easy to vote and hard to cheat this November. (Never mind that research shows voter fraud is quite rare; that Republican-led gerrymandering has helped enshrine minority rule, as my colleague Ari Berman has covered; and that Trump still refuses to admit he lost the 2020 electiondespite more than 60 failed legal challenges affirming that he did.)
According to the New Yorker, much of the RNCs strategy relies on indulging supporters paranoia over conspiracy theories about a Democrat-coordinated campaign to steal the electionvia the usual suspects, undocumented immigrants and dead peopleand training volunteers to be the eyes and the ears of the Trump campaign, as far-right Internet personality Jack Posobiec put it. If they suspect fraud, the volunteers are told, they should call the RNCs election integrity hotline, which a team of volunteer attorneys will apparently answer.

(10,125 posts)If they have hordes of armed vigilantes near the polls on election day it will scare off some voters, but since Repubs tend to wait to vote until election day instead of voting early, they will be scaring off their own voters.

(35,298 posts)Their efforts to recruit observers in the past has been pitiful. Very few observers, poorly trained, no backup. That kind of effort (which the Democrats have had for years) takes years to develop.
And, those who do show up will spend a lot of time asking the experienced Democratic observers what to do and and what is going on. And, even if they don't, they will see a team of people who are dedicated to ensuring the elections run smoothly, and that everyone who is entitled to vote gets to do so. There are occasional glitches, but well-trained observers will help (if needed) get them fixed.

(8,795 posts)I voted on the first day and a watcher wanted to cut in front. He was 80+ years old. I told him, I will be watching you watching. Cause no trouble.
He was meek as a mouse.

(22,406 posts)at worst a few isolated incidents are probably going to occur. but they won't scare off enough people to swing any state.
